Punting Woes Help Vols Win (From First Sports Page) HE DID, completing five of! nine and having two others caught out of bounds, one out of the end zone. Fans got the feeling that the Vols could have thrown anytime they wanted, but running was a wiser and safer plan. Nine different Vols carried the football, and the line got an opportunity to do some blocking against a team that altered its fronts so constantly it could have been confusing. But it wasn't.

Former Father Ryan Jimmy Miller was one of the ball carriers, running twice for 13 yards. Ex-Pearl star Lavoisier Fisher, a linebacker, and was in on two tackles, one for a three-yard loss. Joe Lee Dunn, the New Mexico coach, said Tennessee came into the game with an excellent game plan. THEY TOOK advantage of their size, put in two tight ends and kept it on the ground," Dunn said. "We're a small team and we couldn't handle it "The way Tennessee did things eliminated what we do best on defense.

They did things that hurt us and just kept doing 'em. "I don't know how good Tennessee really is. I think they'll have trouble when they line up against somebody they don't overpower. They have good running backs but they don't have the great ones. Their backs are not overpowering." The crowd of 89,792 was the smallest in Neyland Stadium since the last enlargement The crowd figure included some 8,000 youngsters admitted free and all the no-shows who were season-ticket holders.

The Vols will not practice the next two days, resuming work on Wednesday for a Sept 24 date with Auburn. They have Saturday off. Kelly Zeigler, freshman line backer, is lost for the season with a dislocated ankle. But other injured Vols, David Scandrett and Jim Dunkin, are expected to be ready for the Auburn game. suddenly September 7, 1983 at a local infirmary.
