www.iennessean.com 1Mb IbNNfcSSEAN Monday, September 2, 2002 3D ENTERTAINMENT ROCK Diamond Rio's not what it could be on 'Completely' Goo Goos still the way to go TONIGHT Our picks for the best entertainment options IvvaW tH 1 iffi-rSaTr. ll. Want something else? Club, restau- rant, movie and concert listings at www.tennessean.comentertainment The Goo Goo Dolls are at AmSouth tonight There is no question about our pick for the best way to finish up your Labor Day Weekend. After all, the Goo Goo Dois are in town for a show that begins at 6:45 p.m. at AmSouth Amphitheatre.

And not only are ViSy here, but so are modern rock sensations Third Eye BGnd and the rising star Vanessa Cart-ton. But, of course, the best reason to go is to see how the Goo Goos are these days. The pop-rockers from Buffalo, N.Y., follow their multi-platinum Dizzy Up the Girl with Gutterflower, an equally accessible collection of impossibly catchy material that has been hovering around the top of the charts since its April release. The handsome trio's time-tested formula includes a safe dose of guitar riffage, ample parts acoustic balladry and unlimited portions of singable choruses and lovey-dovey lyrics. Mainstream audiences got their first taste of the Goo Goo Dolls' sugary recipe in 1995, when their song Name broke into top 40 radio.

Their success continued through a slew of soundtrack cuts and MTV favorites, including Iris, the chart-topper featured on the City of Angels soundtrack With their latest frequently played single Here Is Gone, the Dolls show they've got their formula down to a science. The well-coifed threesome continue their amphitheatre tour with their AmSouth stop, and plan to give the community more than just a night of infectious pop songs. The group is asking fans to bring canned food donations for USA Harvest, a nonprofit organization that will feed local families in need Tickets are and available through Ticketmaster or the box office. HEATHER JOHNSON, THE RAGE Diamond Rio Complttely Arista Nashville Hard to say exactly what to think about this mixed bag, as it shirts from country's solution record the more-than-capable musicians that comprise Diamond Rio singing and playing some fine material such as Beautiful Mess and Sometfiing Cool) to country's prdb-lem record a cover of a Diane Warren song previously cut by Michael and back again about more good songs, like You'd Like Some Lovin' and Make Sure You've Got It Aim. Wait, did I say a cover of a Diane Warren song that Michael Bolton had already recorded? Yes, and it's the title track.

Ick. Some of the uptempo stuff, including the so-funky-it's-not-funky-at-all The Box and the firedesire filled Big Ol' Fire doesn't make the quality cut, either. But then there are smart, adult (as in "mature," not as in numbers including Arlis Albritton and Steven Dale Jones' We All Fall Down and Tommy Conner and D. Vincent Williams' Youll Find Me. Lead singer Marty Roe and harmony men Dana Williams and Gene Johnson remain tremendous singers.

Jimmy dander's guitar work is, as usual, outstanding, and drummer Brian Prout and keyboardist Dan Trumart more than hold up their end of the equation. These are gifted fellows, it's just that sometimes they let radio aspirations get in the way of a good thing. Hard to fault 'em for that, and a warm reception from radio is more important to a country band's life than 100 three-star reviews. So, here's a two-and-a-half star album from some three-and-a-half star players. -PETER COOPER, STAFF WRITER Elizabeth Cook Hey Tall Warner Bros.

The Grand Ole Opry doesn't generally make a regular out of singers without a widely available album. But they heard Elizabeth Listen up To hear samples of Diamond Rio's Something Cool from their Completely album and Elizabeth Cook's Mama You Wanted to Be from her Hey Yall album, visit our Web site at www.tennessean.com Cook's willowy, wiry drawl and made her part of the family. The Florida-born singer has appeared more than 100 times on the show, so anticipation has been high for this CD among those who would love to hear a female artist with more allegiance to Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton than Celine Dion. The wait was not in vain. Cook's forthright and spirited delivery and her accomplished songwriting traaslate into a fun and diverse album.

Her voice has a reedy and vulnerable individualism. Cook's songs make up the album's sturdy skeletoa Breezy but well-crafted material such as the initial single, Stupid Things, and Sunshine is bolstered by memoirs like Mama You Wanted to Be a Singer Too and broken love songs like the elegant Rainixjws at Midnight. Blue Shades is a tidy country shuffle cut with the Opry's Carol Lee Singers who lend a warm, vintage touch. is a witty picture of the reality of being a lovely singer in a town full of letches. The only cover is an original reading of Jessi Colter's early 70s hit I'm Not Lisa, whose country-politan sound typifies the album's old-meets-new atmosphere.

Producer Richard Dodd cut most of the album in an open studio, letting the players play and the instruments blend together with a liveliness you don't hear on most major-label records. The final track, a Florida ode called Ocaa, has a moving anthemic melody that gets better and better on repeated listening. Darrell Scott's mandolin mingled with Florida swamp sounds make for a restful conclusion to a charming CD. CRAIG HAVIGHURST, STAFF WRITER URBAN Feel the charisma and the rage Dalek doesn't do hip-hop. They don't bling, bounce or boast.

They aren't interested in tired cliches, recycled beats or guests to beef up their sound. Nan, this bizarre trio from New Jersey does its own thing, creates its own niche, and just goes with it without offering any apologies for its heavily experimental skills. Starting out as a duo back in "98, Dalek and the Oktopus flipped the hip-hop world like a hot B-side with a five-song debut EP, Negro, Necro, Nekros. After sharing the stage with the likes of the Pharcyde, De La Soul, Prince Paul and DJ Spooky, Dalek was road-tested and ready for a full-length release. They quickly found a home at Ipecac Records, the brainchild of Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr.

Bungle, Tomahawk, Fantomas, Four years in the making, From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots is Jimi Hendrix, Anti-Pop Consortium and Nine Inch Nails wrapped into one terrifyingly charismatic record. It grabs and clutches for undivided attention and doesn't let go until the last note. And don't sweat it their live performances take it one step further with a rarely seen focus that borders on unbridled rage. Dalek performs at 9 p.m. today at The End, 2219 Elliston Place, with Bad Wizard and Dharmakaya.

Admission is $7. Call 321-4457 for more information. BRIAN SPENCER, THE RAGE Club addresses The End, 2219 Elliston Place, 321-4457 Station Inn, 402 12th Ave. 255-3307 Bean Central, 2817 West End 327-1159 Outer Limit, 3758 Nolensville Road, 781-0068 MORE LIVE MUSIC Money Mark, the unofficial fourth Beastie Boy, has a new instrumental album out on Emperor Norton Records. Taking the cool aesthetics and fuzzy keyboard craziness that he brought to his work with the Dust Brothers and such Beasties records as the classic Check Your Head and Communication to new levels, he's doing some cool stuff.

9 tonight, The Outer Limit, $14 for 18-20; $10 for 21 and up. Also tonight, Cole Slivka hosts her weekly songwriter night at Bean Central, featuring Jon Oswald, Erich Schellhas and Bill Boutwefl. It's free and starts at 8 p.m. SWING Take the jump That zoot suit swing craze came and went in the 1990s like a flavor of the month, but the true immortal swing lives on in the weekly appearances of the Time Jumpers at the Station Inn. Truly one of Nashville's Can't-Miss gigs, the Jumpers consist of two Grand Ole Opry fiddlers, stellar guitar and steel, a slippery accordion and a crack rhythm sectioa Their music fills one of the city's coziest bars, a plywood-floor affair that hpsts the world's best bluegrass.

Get thee hence. Time is 9 p.ra Cover is $7. CRAIG HAVIGHURST, STAFF Coming up Believe it or not, the Nashville Symphony opener is almost upon us. Grammy-winner Bobby McFer- rm, a versatile vocalist, composer and conductor, arrives here Thursday for a one-night, 8 p.m. gig in TPAC's Jackson Hall.
