The Sounds rallied for the win after retiring the final 12 Memphis batters in order.

A Greer Stadium crowd of 5350 watched the Sounds bounce back from the first game of the series against Memphis when the Red-birds rolled to a 9-1 victory. After a sluggish start, the Sounds collected six hits during the fourth through seventh innings. Nashville took the lead in the sixth inning when Warren Morris' grounder hit the front of the pitcher's mound, bounced high into the air and landed in center-field. That scored Alex Hernandez from second, giving the Sounds their first lead Morris hit his second home run of the year in the fourth inning for Nashville's other rua Nashville finished the game with nine hits. Scott Karl (2-2) had his longest outing of the seasoa pitching eight innings.

He allowed six hits, walked one, and struck out sevea Billy Taylor relieved Karl in the ninth, and ended the game with three consecutive ground outs. "Scott did a very good job of mixing up his pitches," Sounds Manager Marty Brown said "It was a real smart pitching effort It was kind of a tough decision to take Scott out when we did but Billy Taylor is our closer, that's what he gets paid to do." He struck out sevea walked two and helped the Marlins beat John Smoltz for just the third time in 16 games.

"That's a huge find," Boles said. Smith retired the first nine Braves in order and didn't get into any real trouble until the eighth. "I waited a long time to get here and perform, and now is my time," said Smith, barely a iOO pitcher (59-53) in his minor league career. Smoltz also was impressive, at least early. Making his second start since October 1999 because of elbow surgery, Smoltz (0-2) gave up nine hits and three runs in 5 13 innings.

Still it was a much better outing than his last start Against Colorado last week, the 1996 NL Cy Young Award winner allowed five runs, six hits and walked two in three innings. "It's hard to come away feeling good whenever you lose, but I do," said Smoltz, who had not started 0-2 since being 0-3 in 199L LosAngeles 000 003 101 8 12 1 Colorado 012 030 41x -11 14 0 Grudzielanek (3).
