Big Joey Meyer, who leads the league in home runs and runs batted In, hit another roundtripper, this one just to the right of the 405-foot center field fence. He now has 27 dingers and 84 RBI. The Sounds battered Mike Birk-back and Dave Stapleton for 17 hits and were helped by six errors, three of which made six of the seven runs in the fourth unearned.

Terry McGriff, who entered the game batting .273 and riding a red-hot streak, had another four-for-four night He now has nine hits in his last 1 1 at-bats and five in his last five appearances. Last night, he had two singles, a double and triple and drove in three runs. Buddy Pryor, who pinch-hit for him in the eighth, kept up the good work by belting his first home run of the season over the left field fence. That meant that Manager Jack Lind got five hits and four RBI from the No. 5 spot It also meant that every man used by Lind got at least one hit Others besides McGriff having a multi-hit game were Lenny Harris, Chris Sabo, Orsi-no Hill Garcia with two each.

Fourth-place Oklahoma Gty moves into Greer tonight to start a three-game series with the Sounds. Dodgers 2, Braves 1: John Shelby broke a scoreless tie with a seventh-inning solo homer and Orel Hershiser pitched an eight-hitter as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 2-1. Mets 8, Cubs 2: Dwight Gooden boosted his record to 4-1 in his fifth start since drug rehabilitation, allowing just three hits in seven innings yesterday as the New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 8-2. Expos 7, Pirates 2: Tim Raines hit a two-run homer and Mitch Webster went 4-for-5 with three runs batted in as the Montreal Expos defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-2. Padres 4, Astros 1: A bloop single by Carmelo Martinez that Houston second baseman Bill Doran lost in the sun led to two runs in a four-run sixth inning as San Diego beat the visiting Astros4-l. "If I don't start, that's the way it goes," Murphy said. "I've had the opposite happea Last year was a case where I probably didn't warrant a start I'm really not concerned about it Just being on the All-Star team is a great thrill." Going into last night's game with Los Angeles, Murphy led the National League with 23 homers, was second in runs scored with 59, fourth in batting at fifth in hits with 84; and tied for fifth in RBI with 52. "If he's not in the starting outfield, it's a sin," Braves Manager Chuck Tanner said. "He's the best player in the league right now." Ron Robinson is showing signs of becoming the consistent "stopper" that the Cincinnati Reds badly need on their beleagured starting pitching staff. "He's pretty much mowing them down, Isn't he?" shortstop Kurt Still well said.

"It's nice to see that he can go out there and throw seven strong innings Other teams have a stopper, a guy that will do that for them every turn. That's the way I look at Robbie." The right-hander, 25, was transferred from the bullpen into the starting rotation two weeks ago when the Reds demoted struggling left-hander Tom Browning to the Nashville Sounds and released veteran righthander Jerry Reuss. Robinson, now 3-2, held the third-place San Francisco Giants to four hits and a run in 6 13 innings as the Reds won, 4-1 Tuesday night The Giants did not score through the first six innings. Former major league baseball player Doug Flynn says watching his best friend being taken to the hospital after using drugs convinced him 17 years ago to quit even occasionally trying illegal substances. "I've taken drugs and did try marijuana and cocaine when I was 19," said Flynn, now 36.

"I couldn't admit that for a long time because I was ashamed of what I had done. I wasn't an abusive user, but I did try those drugs. "I quit when I saw my best friend go to the hospital. Unfortunately, not everybody can do that That's why the best way not to get hooked is Just not to try drugs." Bill Robinson, the New York Mets first base coach and hitting instructor, has been named manager of the Caracas Lions of the Venezulean League. Major league baseball, which has had only three black managers in its history, has been under pressure to hire blacks for front office and managerial jobs.

Robinson, who is black, will begin his managing job on Oct 25, when the defending champion Lions open their 60-game season. Minnesota hard-luck knuckleball-er Joe Niekro, who was hit in the shoulder by a thrown ball in warmups shortly after having separated the same shoulder, pitched painlessly during batting practice yesterday and shouldn't miss any more starts. Instead, he has turned into their No.

1 disappointment Just when it seemed he could shake loose from Dwight Gooden's aura and win his own games and accolades, Darling can't win anything. Darling has not won in 12 starts since April 22. He has lost a career-high five straight games and his earned run average Is 5.03. "This game can bring you to your knees," he said. "It's a roller-coaster ride in the land of confidence.

"I never thought I'd have a streak like this. It's very humbling." Darling's disaster came when the Mets needed him most He has not been able to fill the void left on a pitching staff decimated by Injuries and Gooden's two-month absence as he came back from a cocaine problem. The Mets went 26-8 in games he started last year, the best such record for any pitcher in the National League. In his three full seasons, his record during that time was 44-24 with a 3.12 ERA. Last season, Darling went 15-6 and pitched well in the World Series, helping him win a $1 million contract in salary arbitration.

The biggest trouble may be deter- mining what is wrong with Darling. No one seems to know. Darling, 2-5, throws an outstanding split-finger fastball, forkball and changeup. His control has been off this year, but not horribly so. Many critics say his problem Is the same one he's had since leaving his Southeast Asian history studies at Yale University he is too bright for his own good.

Some say Darling thinks too much on the mound. It is that reputation, along with his fashion-magazine good looks and taste, that has earned him a nickname from teammates he doesn't like, "Mr. as in Perfect Elsewhere in major league baseball: His statistics say he should be the American League's All-Star catcher, but you won't hear Detroit's Matt Nokes making such a statement As a rookie, Nokes, who played last year for the Nashville Sounds, figures it's not his place to campaign. "It would be great if it happens, but I just don't think about it" said Nokes, who will carry a .318 average, 41 RBI and a team-high 1 4 homers into the Tigers' game tonight against Baltimore in Tiger Stadium. "This isn't the coaches or players voting, it's the fans," he said.

"Being a rookie, I don't know if anyone even knows who I am." If Nokes makes the All-Star team, it may be as a backup, mainly because he isn't on the ballot Write-in candidates rarely receive enough votes to win a first-string berth. The Atlanta Braves' Dale Mur-. phy is having an all-star season, but he's a distant fourth in balloting for three outfielders for the National League All-Star team. Figures released this week have Cincinnati's Eric Davis in first place with 718,737 votes in balloting for outfielders.
