Church League Nov aawiwiwwawjwwaiwjmpwawwaii THIS YEAR'S crop of Athlete of the Year candidates is just as talented, energetic and dedicated as Fisher and Cowan. Weatherspoon is an obvious candidate. His credentials include not only football, in which he broke the all-time NIL rushing record, but basketball (his fun sport), and baseball (his best sport). McGavock's Kevin Kalen, like Weatherspoon, is a leading nominee. Kalen quarterbacked the football team, played point priorities in order.

When it came time to select a icollege, the Stratford senior put first, football second, land coming in a close third, base- Jball. But, neither Ryan's Tony Miller nor Overton's Charlie "Fruit" Bell can be overlooked although both decided to take the winter season off. These two were able to make such an impressive showing in football and now in baseball that there names must be added to the list.

OTHER BOYS very much in consideration are Goodpasture's Armando Fitz, FRA's Sterling Ambrose, Overton's. Keith Davis and John Mitchell, Antioch's Danny Jenkins, Glencliff's Keith Paskett, Franklin's Bobby Bran-non, Goodlettsville's Larry Can-trell and Whites Creek's Quinton Crawford. The girls whose names immediately spring to mind are McGavock's Toni Griffith, the leading candidate until the outstanding track performer fractured her leg during the regional basketball tournament. And, she may not be through yet. Despite the injury, Griffith is working to return to action as a sprinter, and she is out on the field throwing the shot put and the discus until the doctor says she can run again.

Among other girls to be considered are Hillsboro's Nan Burrus, Glencliff's Dee Ann Davis, FRA's Lynne Coleman, Goodlettsville's Janet Osborne, McGavock's Ann Lee Dennis and Dupont's Darlene Green. Neither list is complete, and coaches are urged to nominate qualified boys and girls. INGLEWOOD BOWL: Church of 301. A 10.863. jof specialization, many athletes ome as early as grade school i-Ieel they must choose a sport jaiJoT: concentrate on it to the exclusion of all others. Back in 1960, Jimmy Davy, sthelLThe Tennessean Prep Edi-jjto)r-Came up with an idea to the Kenny Weather-speens of this world, athletes Iwh'o eschew specialization for an high school sports carreer. The result was The Tennessean gNlL' Athlete of the Year award.

At the time, other media gave jtaost valuable player awards, but Jattune was recognizing the athlete who participated during the entire school year. The first winner was Father Ryan's Art Guepe son of then Vanderbilt football coach Art Guepe Sr. Other early winners were Wayne Bush, Glencliff, 1961; Austin Denney, Donelson, 1962; Chuck Boyd, Madison, 1963; and Mike Mondelli, Ryan, 1964. Football was their domi-; nant sport, all going either to Vanderbilt or Tennessee for collegiate careers, but they had other interests in the school year. GIRLS HONORED in those days were predominantly basketball players, but since the advent of more and varied sports for girls, the emphasis is not as great as it once was.

Last year's winners were perfect examples of the well-round- ed athletes. Lavoisier Fisher, now a University of Tennessee linebacker, was a standout at Pearl on the football field, bas- ketball court and baseball dia- mond. And, as Fisher would be the first to admit, he ran track although the results were far less successful. Yet, the Pearl track 1 team needed him. Jackie Cowan, the ex-Whites Creek All-American now playing basketball at Vanderbilt, could have easily decided to dedicate all her energies to basketball, but instead she was also a fine volley- ball player and a superior track athlete, winning the state high jump crown.
