OERMANN Doyle Wilburn. of the Grand 01e Opry singing duo, the Wilburn Brothers, died of cancer yesterday morning at Baptist 1 The musician, 52, was hospital-; ized Oct. 6, when it was discov- ered that his cancer was worsen-' ingv He had been given the can-: cer diagnosis just three months ago.

HIS DEATH, at 9:10 a.m.,; came just hours after his brother, Teddy, had sung a song to him on the Friday night Opry show. Mr. Wilburn's illness had been the subject of much discussion among the older attendees of last week's Disc Jockey Con-I vention. Memorial services will be at 1 Tuesday at Forest Hills I Baptist Church, with graveside I services immediately afterward; I at National Cemetery. The Wilburn Brothers began in show business as members of the Wilburn Family, an Arkansas gospel act that included their -parents, sister Geraldine, and brothers Leslie and Lester.

In the 1940s Teddy and Doyle became a music duet ROY ACUFF discovered the" pair, and brought them to the Grand Ole Opry in 1940, when. Doyle was 10 and Teddy was 11. I They stayed six months, then continued to go from radio show -to radio show, building their pop-lularity. 'V In 1948 the Wilburns became members of Shreveport's Louisiana Hayride radio show. At that time the show's cast served as a sort of farm team for the Opry.

Their career was interrupted temporarily In the 1950s when both brothers served in the Korean War. By. the time they returned, Webb Pierce had graduated from the Hayride to Opry stardom, and he brought Teddy, and Doyle back to Nashville in-1953. The brothers joined the Grand Ole Opry that year, and the two signed a recording contract with Decca shortly afterward. THEIR HITS began coming in 1959, the year their Which One Is To Blame? reached No.

4 on the Billboard charts. In rapid succession came Wilburn Brothers' versions of the folk song Knox-ville Girl and A Woman's Intuition. These three numbers were their signature tunes until 1962's Trouble's Back In Town was named Cashbox magazine's Country Record of the Year. The Wilburns parlayed their record success into successful music business enterprises. This was primarily Doyle Wilburn's doing.

ONE OF DOYLE Wilburn's most significant business accomplishments was launching the career of Loretta Lynn. He obtained 15 straight Opry guest ap-, pearances for her when she first arrived in Nashville; signed to Wil-Helm over his brother's Set of 4 Salad Plates, Set of 4 Rim Soups. Doyle Wiiburn Came toOrpy at age 10 objections that she sounded too much like Kitty Wells; published all of her compositions prior to 1970; featured her on the weekly TV show, and convinced Owen Bradley to put her on Decca Records. Through Wil-Helm, Doyle Wilburn managed Lynn's career for 10 years. He was also helpful to country singer Margie Bowes.

The two met and courted at the Grand Ole Opry where both sang on Saturday nights. -They married in 1961. They had one daughter, Sharon, before divorcing some years ago. He is survived by his brothers Teddy, Leslie and Lester, all from the Nashville area; by his sister, Geraldine Grisham of Hot Springs, by his daughter, Sharon Stevens, who now lives in Germany, and by his mother, Mrs. B.E.
