14-F THE TENNESSEAN, Thurtdoy, Februory 2, 1984 30,000 Amur Introduced Into Reelfoot by TWRA Oy Outdoors NICK SULLIVAN The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has completed the introduction of approximately 30,000 white amur into Reelfoot Lake to help control the underwater weeds that are choking that lake. The white amur, commonly called the grass carp, is a weed eating fish species native to Eastern Asia. The fish has been stocked in several other countries and in other states in the United States. It has been proven effective in controlling excessive underwater weeds such as those plaguing Reelfoot. "I FULLYexpect the 30,000 amur to have a measurable impact on the submerged weeds at Reelfoot by this coming fall," said Eugene Cobb, TWRA lakes and hatcheries biolo- ies, the fish also may eat the cuttings if they find them to their liking." The "cookie cutter" is in the federal budget for purchase by the U.S.

Fish and Wildlife Service to be used by Reelfoot National Refuge personnel for weed control, primarily in keeping the navigational canals cleared of aquatic growth. TWRA PLACEDeight truck loads of the eight to 10-inch fish in Reel-foot. The first load was placed in the lake in mid-December and the final stocking came late last month. TWRA employes had to use axes to chop a six-foot square whole in foot-thick ice to facilitate the final stocking. Winter, however, is the best time to haul fish, said Joe Freeman, TWRA hatchery manager.

"Since it was cold, we were really-able to crowd these fish on our trucks," said Freeman. "In most instances we had far more fish in our tanks than we had water. The amur really is tolerant to handling and the fish put in Reelfoot were in excellent condition." TENNESSEE ACQUIRED the amur from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. It is illegal for commercial fishermen to harvest the amur. "These fish have the potential of reaching 30 to 40 pound sizes over the next few years," Cobb said.

During the 112 consecutive day run, 8,380 five-man teams, including 6,601 in the Regular division, both records, will compete. A total of 20,950 doubles teams, 40,900 singles and 40,142 all-events entries will bowl. This smashes all entry marks that were set in 1977 when the ABC was held in Reno.

This entry also leads to the record $1,657,710 prize fund, over $200,000 more than the record set last year in Niagara Falls, N.Y. TIIE 40 specially constructed lanes by Brunswick in the convention center just for this event are set. ABC's $1.25 million computerized scoreboard is ready to go for Saturday's opening. The tournament can accomodate 400 doubles and singles daily, "the same number we have room for on the two daily team squads," said an ABC official. Wesley Bogleo of Kendall Park, N.J., ABC president, and Nevada Lt.

Gov. Robert Cashell will preside over the opening ceremonies and a "Joe Bowler" will be named by draw from the opening squad to roll the first ball Saturday. This will start the Showcase of Bowling. When the event is over May 25, 387,980 games will have been bowled by amateur bowlers representing every state and several foreign countries. The Rollers consist of blind bowlers and one sighted bowler to a team to keep scores and records and inform team members which pins are standing. "One of the problems blind bowlers have," said Jordan, "is getting to the lanes, especially during the bad weather." Anyone interested should call Jordan at 741-2156 or contact West Bowl. His team is 6-4 this season in games where he's averaged 20 points or better.

Jose Crisp adds inside strength with averages of 11.4 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. Senior Glenn Washington quarterbacks the Tiger offense. "We think we're a lot better team than 8-10, but the only way to improve on that is to play hard and win," said Washingtoa "We know Middle Tennessee will be ready to play a good game against us." WITH WASHINGTON in command, the Tigers can apply effective pressure on defense and convert turnovers and missed shots into easy baskets. It worked against North Carolina and Cage said he expected more of the same tonight "We had some success earlier in the year by really pushing the ball up the court on Middle Tennessee, to not give their big guys a chance to get set It'll be that way again this time, I'm sure," he noted. TSU has won three of the last four meetings between the two teams.

(From First Sports Page) Senior Maury Mapes has started all 18 games this season at point guard, while sophomore LaRae Davis leads his team with a 13.5-point average. SIMPSON HAS maintained all season that his team is playing without an ideal athlete to plug into the "No. 3" or wing position, after newcomer Anthony Anderson decided to go home after a week on campus. "You'd look for a player about 6-4 or 6-5, a guy who's strong, moves well, grabs some rebounds and is always a scoring threat," said the coach. Hmmm.

Sounds a lot like TSlTs Cage, doesn't it? "WelL Ronnie Cage is a premiere player, and he's proven again and ag3in that he can win games for them," said Simpson, wincing at this season's earlier loss to TSU. "I'm impressed with their personnel and the way they've been playing together. There's a lot of good chemistry in their lineup," the MTSU coach added. i AUTO SERVICE CENTERS MADISON SOUTH NASHVILLE DOWNTOWN EAST NASHVILLE WEST NASHVtiE IIVUGAJE COLUMBIA tmi Mghum, Mgr.
