THE TENNESSEAN, Monday, March 7, 1983 Soap Stars Sing About Love on Album By SANDY NEESE ray, THE Michael NAMES Storm, Mary Mur- Joel Crothers, Sharon Gabet, Loanne Bishop, John Gabriel, Susan Lucci, Stuart Damon, Helen Gallagher or James Mitchell ring any bells? If not, try Becky Lee Abbott, Dr. Larry Wolek, Dr. Miles Cavanaugh, Raven Alexander, Rose Kelly, Dr. Seneca Beaulac, Erica Kane, Dr. Alan Quartermaine, Maeve Ryan and Palmer Cortlandt.

Those names will definitely be familiar to fans of the ABC afternoon soap operas All My Children, Ryan's Hope, One Life to Live, General Hospital and The Edge of 1 Night. THESE 10 STARS are featured vocalists on a brand new MCA album entitled Love in the Afternoon, produced by Jim Foglesong, with arrangements by Al Delory. "The project has actu-. been on the boards for three years," said Foglesong. "A friend who's a consultant for ABC-TV called and asked if I'd be interested, and I said I'd love to discuss it.

ABC was getting aggressive with its daytime television programming, so there wasn't time then to do anything. We touched base for the next 18 months or so, and he finally called and said, 'Come to New York. We're So I did. "Love in the Afternoon" is the copyrighted name for this period of daytime programming," he continued. "We did some of the recording in New York, some in L.A.

and some in Nashville. ABC made recommendations as to the stars to be included, and I could have vetoed somebody if I'd felt they didn't have the talent, but I went along and I'm glad I did. There're two artists from each of the five afternoon shows on the album." Although Mary Murray is the only performer whose television character, Becky Lee Abbott, actually sings as part of her role, most of the others have had experience before the microphone. "Michael Storm (Dr. Larry Wolek, One Life to Live) was part of the Good Time Singers, a California folk group during the 1960s," said Foglesong.

"He's a real outdoorsman who loves to hunt and fish, and has season tickets to all of the Yankee's baseball games. "JOHN GABRIEL (Dr. Seneca Beaulac, Ryan's Hope) is a fine' singer who's recorded before, and was Robert Goulet's understudy in The Happy Time. He's really excited about the number he did, Now That I Have Everything, which is an original song he found. He told me, 'Of, all the records I've made, I've waited 20 years for a song like said the MCA executive.

"Stuart Damon (Dr. Alan Quartermaine, General Hospital) started out as.a singer and had the lead in the television musical Cinderella opposite Lesley Ann Warren. He's spent a lot of time in Europe as a singer and actor, and is one of the most popular male actors on television today, and I don't just mean daytime television. "James Mitchell (Palmer Cortlandt, All My Children) is actually a dancer, a fine hoofer. He was on Broadway in Brigadoon and Carousel, and was in the movie version of He's kinda shy, not stilted at all like the character he plays." Foglesong said.

"Helen Gallagher (Maeve Ryan, Ryan's Hope) was in Brigadoon with Mitchell, I believe. She took Ann Miller's place in Sugar Babes when Miller was on vaca- 'Crime Stoppers' Will Be Aired at 10:30 Tonight Scheduling the introduction to WNGE-Channel 2's "Crime Stoppers" program opposite the closing episode of probably wasn't the wisest choice. But Channel 2 has recognized the error of its ways and rescheduled the half-hour documentary for 10:30 p.m. tonight. The special, hosted by news anchor Teddy Bart, focuses first on Songwriters To (Continued from page 1-D) Lew Bachman lobbied successfully for the favorable change in the 1976 copyright law for songwriters.

They were instrumental in doubling the royalty rate paid to songwriters in 1980. AGAC has been at the forefront in songwriter contract negotiations and publisher audits, and now it is bringing its considerable political clout to bear on the Buffalo Decision. "We are filing an amicus brief on behalf of songwriters," Weiss revealed yesterday. "We are going to bring out the fear of the songwriter and the terror of this situation." "If this decision is allowed to stand it will be telling the youth of today with words and music in their hearts that they will forever be paupers if they choose songwriting as a life," he said. the anatomy of an investigationthe long hours and great expense that go into solving a crime.

From there, viewers learn how the new "Crime Stoppers" program, which asks the public for tips on unsolved crimes, can benefit the entire community. Included will be a poll on crime and an update on investigation into last week's Crime of the Week, the Tom Challenor murder. Fight Decision "I AM GOING to plead to the courts for our families and our livelihoods," Weiss asserted. Songwriter Sandy Pinkard has done some lobbying in Washington. He and the other assembled composers agreed that although this case is a BMI and ASCAP fight, the songwriters are the real victims.

Added Steve Gibb, "With AGAC coming in to fight for us, there's hope in this room now." He urged the crowd to join AGAC in the legal battle. On Saturday night when Bobby Braddock accepted his award for the John Anderson hit he wrote (Would You Catch a Falling Star) he said, "It's essential for all the songwriters of the world to stand together as brothers and sisters." At the end of George Weiss' AGAC report, his words took on new meaning. -By BOB OERMANN err. exander, Edge of Night) is a brilliant girl, a registered nurse and quite a dancer. The first day we met, she was getting ready leave on a three-week cruise va-' cation being sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History, and there were to be lectures every day and archeological digs. "Joel Crothers (Dr. Miles Cavanaugh, Edge of Night) is the Tom Selleck look-alike that's in the Jacob's Best beer commercials. He started out as a child actor and grew up in the theater, and graduated from Harvard magna cum laude," Foglesong said.

Susan Lucci (Erica Kane, All My Children) was the hardest to corral into the studio because of her busy schedule. This, lovely "Queen of Daytime who's nothing at all in real life like the witchy, trouble-making Erica, was filming episodes of both Fantasy Island and Love Boat during the time of the recording. "She's a lovely voice and was totally cooperative," he said. "She chose to do Someone to Watch Over Me because she thought it would be a perfect song for Erica, who's so insecure and needs someone to watch over her." Susan is very much a family woman, married to an Austrian five-star chef and mother of two children. "Loanne Bishop (Rose Kelly, General Hospital) hasn't done that much singing," Foglesong said, "but she's studied violin for quite a few years and did' an outstanding job.

"Mary Gordon Murray (Becky Lee Abbott, One Life to Live) is Miss Berry Is Married Miss Jeanette Martin Berry of Boston and Henry Oscar Houghton Jr. of Concord, and Boston were married Saturday at a small ceremony at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James I. Vance Berry with the Rev.

an excellent singer, who's done several on and off-Broadway shows." MURRAY'S BECKY Lee Abbott was introduced to viewers of One Life to Live four years ago as a country music singer, but that's changing. The story li line has Becky Lee being encouraged to branch out and try a variety of musical styles. "Because the show reaches so many different people, we decided it was time to expand what she sings to try to please everybody. She'll be doing more standards, which isn't all that unusual for a country singer. After all, Willie Nelson did a whole album of standards," said Murray between rehearsals and tapings on the One Life set.

Although she's recorded before, Mary sees herself as an actress who sings, rather than viceversa. "I've spent so much time breaking into the acting aspect of this business, I need to contentrate my energies there." The New York resident was pleased with the album. "I think it's great! I had a good time working with Jim (Foglesong), and I loved being back in Nashville. It's a dream down there," she said. A previous visit was sparked by an episode in which Becky Lee and Johnny Drummond (Wayne Massey) performed on the Grand Ole Opry.

THE SHOW'S producers are extremely flexible with their stars, allowing them time to pursue other interests. Mary played in Grease for several weeks, and was in Little Me, a Broadway production that closed after a short run. Mary's looking forward to traveling some to help promote Love in the Afternoon. "We're putting together a television merchandising package," said Foglesong. "We'll also have after a wedding trip to Harbour Island, Eleuthera in the Bahamas.

Rostropovich Recital (Continued from page 1-D) ta, as in everything else of the afternoon, was the unstinting, effortlessness of his phrasing. Full-throated song is his metier, in and the melody flowed with an seamless purity of line. Much of his work in lighter moments, as in the Brahms' minuetto or the Bourees of the Bach, had about it a haughty vitality which was handsomely contrasted with the symphonic sweep of broader passages. At the same time, Rostropovich's interpretations are unfailingly intimate in scale, a quality that is reinforced by the soft-hued, poetic keyboard work of his daughter.

HIS OPINIONS concerning that Bach Suite, however, are hardly those of a purist. His rendering yesterday was as straightforward and unassuming as the Major scale which serves as groundwork for its Prelude. Moving happily through its dance card, and particularly in the Allemande, he played with the music, tossing it about with an entirely personal glee. If intensity seemed to loll over the Sarabande, its place was taken by a burnished beauty of tone. Of course, there is a personable Slavic flair.

about everything to which Rostropovich sets his boweven if it is Debussy. His way with that sonata's Prologue was everything that musicmaking should be: unassuming, controlled, and heartfelt. HE WAS most at home, though, in the music of his friend and mentor Shostakovich. Its opening movement was filled out with a burning beauty that was undergirded by some grand-scale playing from Elena. The long-lined melody was touching, while the muted dead march had a surreptitious tension.

But even in that trudging lament which is the Largo-striving to overcome but falling at last into an infinitely sad dejectionRostropovich's playing is beyond sentiment. It is the affectionate work of a man who has lived this music. Standing ovations brought the cellist, with his delightfully skipping little walk, back for two encores: On Faure's "Apres un reve" he lavished as much love as he had given to anything that had gone before; and Popper's chestnut of an "Elfin Dance" was a flurry of tiny intervals.
