MONTREAL PRTLADrXPHlA Glenn McCadams has been hired by David Lipscomb High as athletic director and bead football coach. McCadams, now head coach at Peabody High in Trenton, replaces Keith Earle, who resigned after the 1981 football season. "DAVID LIPSCOMB has made a commitment to have the best possible football program," said McCadams.

"The administration and the supporters are behind the program, and my goal is to bring Lipscomb football to a consistently competitive level." As head coach at Peabody High, McCadams compiled a 31-12 record with four bowl victories. Before taking over the program at Peabody, McCadams was an assistant coach at Milan under John Wade Tucker. In 1977, Milan won the TSSAA Class AA state football championship. During McCadams' nine years (1969-77) at Milan, the squad's record was 82-17-2. But McCadams said that number of victories is not the only mark of a successful coach.

IP RER BB SO I Caulkins Takes Medley Title GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Fourteen-year-old Dara Torres won the women's 50-yard freestyle and Tracy Caulkins picked up her 38th national swimming title last night at the United States Open Short Course Championships. Torres, a high school freshman from Beverly Hills, edged American record-holder Jill Sterkel in the sprint with a time of 22.44 seconds, better than Sterkel's 22.46 but shy of the 22.41 the 20-year-old University of Texas star set in 1981. Caulkins, a 19-year-old University of Florida freshman who eclipsed Johnny Weissmuller's record 36 national titles on Thursday, glided to an easy victory in the women's 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.94. That was shy of her 1981 American record of 1:57.11.

Caulkins, swimming for the Nashville Aquatic Club in her hometown, won the 400-yard individual medley on Thursday to win her 37th title since 1977 and surpass Wejssmuller's 54-year-old record for individual championships. Earlier in this four-day meet, she won the 200-yard backstroke and also is entered in the 100-yard breaststroke today. Caulkins will go after national title No.39 today in the 100-meter breaststroke. The Nashville Aquatic Club which she and sister Amy are representing and which also has a handful of younger competitors also on hand is tied for second in the team competition with the Longhorn club from Austin, Texas. Defending national champ Mission Viejo (Calif.) leads the team chase.

"There are four principles that I think are basic in athletics," he continued. "One is a good attitude which is important in all of life. Two is hard work the hardest single lesson for a young person to learn is to hustle at all times, to have a commitment to a cause. 'THE THIRD principle that an athlete needs js pride in school," he said. "And the fourth is class to be a gentleman at all times." The Huntington High, Bethel College graduate was a quarterback in high school who also excelled in basketball and baseball.

As the new Lipscomb AD, McCadams plans to emphasize all sports not just football. c- "In high school, it is vital to let kids play as many sports as they want," said McCadams. "It's just not fair to the kids to let one sport dominate." Coaching at a small school does not concern McCadams. "Peabody is barely Class AA," said McCadams. "The key element to coaching in a small coach is to get as many people as possible out for football, and to let them play.

"It's the average player that makes a football team successful," he said. David Lipscomb's first football stadium on Maplehurst Lane will be completed for McCadams' first season. Tommy Dorsey Glenn Miller Benny Goodman Artie Shaw Harry James Li wtiw LA And now Gne Whit brings their sounds and many more). Featuring tht Fifth Avonut vocal group. This Sunday at tho Marriott said yesterday's extremely slow play could be blamed on the slippery greens. "It takes a lot of time to play greens this fast For instance, there haven't been many times in my life that I deliberately putted short of the cup on a 12-foot, uphill putt. But that's what I did at the 18th in the afternoon," Nicklaus said.

THE PIN PLACEMENT at the 18th was inches away from the edge of a plateau. "I sure didn't want to be looking at a two or three foot putt from above the cup. If you miss, you're back down in the bottom, maybe even off the green," said Nicklaus, whose afternoon round of 77 included five three-putt greens. Concerning his position two shots off the pace, Nicklaus said: "From the beginning I have said this tournament, with these greens, would be a contest of patience and nerves. I still think that pretty well sums it up, and here I sit two over par with just three players in front of me.

That tells the story." For the record, the last time a Masters was won with a plus-par total was 1956 when Jackie Burke, won at 289. NICKLAUS WAS in the final group finishing the second round, and he expressed no surprise at the raft of high scores posted. "When greens are putting as fast as these, the key to scoring is to get the approach shot close. That just wasn't possible on some of the holes. Pin placements weren't the most difficult I've seen here through the years, but the pin committee is just going to have to realize there aren't any backstops or windmills (a reference to miniature golf courses) out there.

A couple of times a spike mark stopped a putt of mine, or honestly, the ball would have rolled off the green. At the 16th, a spike mark probably kept my first putt from going into the lake. That's how fast they are and how treacherously some of the cups were cut," Nicklaus said. Nicklaus, considered one of the slower players la bigtime golf, ssnBSauuBassssaaMsasssssssaasssssssssB oteL "ON THE FIRST hole I hit a fine tee shot and a 3-iron about a 'J oot from the hole for a birdie. At 2, I hit a wedge four feet from the cup and everything was working well.

Then, the elevator ride began. I had a double bogey 'C at the fourth and three bogies be- fore I could finish. It was an unu- sual round for me, but I figure it llwas good enough to get me back the game and I am most happy that." Golfers in the afternoon found brisk wind not only made club -selection difficult, but had helped vdry out the super swift Augusta National greens. Three-putt woes were frequent, and the 18th s. green was particularly trea-t cherous.

"If the winds continue, or if the weather forecast of the possibility of more rain proves correct, then I think the winning score will be over par," Kite said.
