But when the story came out, a lot of people thought it must have been me, because I'm the regular But the ASA people brought their own flagman. State Wins mm- 1 started behind Mike Alexander in the 50-lap feature, but got the jump on the start and never looked back.

Marlin beat Alexander to the finish line by almost a quarter-track length. Jerry Sisco was third and Phil Spickard "MIKE WAS coming on there at the end," said Marlin. "But our car was running so well, especially in the corners, I didn't feel like he would be able to catch me." Alexander said clutch problems at the start may have cost him the race. "I couldn't do much, especially in the turns," Alexander said. "But I'll be back." Marlin had four big leads wiped out by caution flags.

Three of the cautions were brought out by Gary Sutton spinouts. A crowd of 3,708 turned out for last night's races. In the Limited Sportsman race, James Smith and Ricky Cruz started 1-2 and finished in that same order, with almost a full lap on the field. Jesse Nash Merritt Blvd. (From First Sports Page) referred to Merritt as "an asset to the state of Tennessee and the community of Nashville." Prior to those 1 words from Merritt's two most trusted assistants, a crowd of about 500 watched various honors and awards handed to the veteran coach.

Among the highlights: Sen. Jim Sasser called Merritt "a legend in his own time the king of his profession a man whose heart is just as broad as this boulevard," and presented the coach with a copy of a statement Sasser made about him on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Rep. Bill Boner pointed out that Merritt's wife, Maxine, has been a stabilizing factor on his career and that "We appreciate Tennessee State and Big John Merritt." Gov.

Lamar Alexander gave Merritt a copy of the "Outstanding Tennessean Award," and joked that the reason so many politicians were in attendance is that "you haven't lost any homecoming games and you haven't lost many elections either." Mayor Richard Fulton read a proclamation signifying yesterday as "John Ayers Merritt Day" in Nashville. Metro Councilman Willis McCallister, who helped sponsor the measure which led to the re- naming of the street for Merritt, gave the coach a souvenir street sign.
