HARWELL WELLS Staff Writer 4 An afternoon of music, discussion, games and petitions marked Nashville's first world peace festival held yesterday in Centennial Park.

"Reach for Peace" was the theme of the afternoon event, sponsored by the Nashville Peace Alliance, a coalition of groups ranging from the Catholic Diocese to Common Cause. They organized the meeting to promote both "inner peace and international peace," said organizer Paul Slentz. "Our goal was to bring people together to promote peace, and things are going really well," said Slentz. Irene Boyd, a volunteer with the Catholic Diocese, said the Peace Alliance "brought a variety of people here to talk about peace, to show that it's not ail heavy se-; riousj" The festival was anything but heavy. With music for most of the afternoon, along with banners strung from trees and benches, the festival resembled some of Nashville's more traditional carnivals.

Visitors included black and white, young and old, and even some yuppies and "punks." Many traditional peace groups set up booths. They included the Rainbow Coalition, Nashvillians for a Nuclear Arms Freeze and the Coalition in Solidarity with Central America, but there was also room for a number of smaller groups. 1 "We don't expect to become a mass movement," said Hibbard Thatcher of Swords into Plowshares, a group that advocates not paying a portion of federal income taxes to protest military spending. "We feel led by conscience to oppose the uses to which our federal income tax is put," he said. The group's members practice civil disobedience by not paying their taxes, and put the money into alternative uses, such as supporting food banks.

Its latest proposal is for phone users to refuse to pay the federal excise tax on phone use, which they believe is used for military spending. One of the most arresting exhibits was a small mock cemetery set up by the Central American coalition, with crosses for each victim of what they claim was an attack against a bus by U.S.-supported rebels in Nicaragua. Despite the seriousness of some exhibits, it was the small things that served to point out the festival's purpose. Balloons for sale were designed to be released and buyers were urged to "send a message for peace" by releasing them. The First Aid Station was died by Physicians for Social Responsibility, and its first-aid kit sat to one side as much of the station tent's walls were taken up by posters and graphs describing the effects of a nuclear strike on Nashville and Other major cities in Tennessee.

Pamphlets and leaflets were everywhere.
