"Alpha 3 has never lost any money. But if you were to compare the amount of profitability of an art film to a commercial film, the difference is enormous.

"We still have one or two classier films that we have agreed to play, such as 'Nijinsky' (due here in mjd-April), but, by and large, Alpha 3 will play strictly commercial films." While lamenting the lack of patronage for art films in the Louisville area, Shinback says that nationally, the art film business has been shrinking every year for the past decade. Shinback said the closing of Alphas 4, 5, 6 and 7 was not related to the recent poor economic situation. Nor was the format changed at Alpha 3 because of competition with the Vogue or Uptown theaters, "discount" houses that frequently show art films, mostly on a second-run basis, at half or a third of the price of Alpha 3's $3.50 ticket price. The Alpha 3, he says, began before the Vogue or Uptown began showing art films. "It's just never returned to us what we require on our investments.

"The end result is the bottom line. That's show-biz." cau 587-7431 We'll measure, estimate, advise Iree! Just Bruce Shinback, who operates the Alpha Cinemas theater chain in Louisville. Shinback said the theater complex, which opened in November, 1975, "has just never really been a profitable operation." I' In a related move, Shinback said the Alpha 3 Cinema, located in the Holiday Manor Shopping Center, will begin showing regular commercial films. The Alpha 3 had long 'been known as Louisville's only first-run "art theater," bringing to the city high-quality foreign and American I films. "Unfortunately, art films in Louisville don't get the sup-port they should," Shinback said.

"It's time to face the economic reality and the fact that the masses want to see films in English." The Alpha 3 opened its doors nine years ago, in Sep- tember, 1971. Since that time, Shinback says, 95 percent IjOf the "best foreign films" have opened at the theater.
