Relaunch nosed out Silver Eagle for second and Balzac was another nose back in fourth place. Arco was fifth. John Henry paid $15.80, $7.60 and $4.60. Relaunch returned $13.80 and $6.

Silver Eagle, ridden by Bill Shoemaker, paid $4.60 to show. Flying Paster, the even-money favorite who had run second to Spectacular Bid in four other Santa Anita races this winter, tired in the stretch in his first John Henry, a grass specialist once Jpijrchased for only $1,100, won the $163,000 San Luis Rey Stakes and tied Stakes and world records for 1 'miles on the turf at Santa Anita u'j0hn Henry, a 5-year-old gelding Harden by Darrel McHargue, was timed in X23 to tie the Santa Anita, San Luis Rey and world records set in 1970 by Fiddle winner, unbeaten in four races hls year, stayed a close second through turf race and first outing at ll3 miles and finished sixth. Golden Act, who had two runner-up finishes and a third in the Triple Crown races last year, before a successful switch to grass in late 1979, finished a badly beaten seventh under jockey Sandy Hawley. All entries carried 126 pounds. FAIR GROUNDS Pool Court, ridden by Ronald Ardoin, won the $140,000 New Orleans Handicap by a head over Five Star General.

Another 1 lengths back was Book of Kings, which had been head-to-head with Pool Court from midstretch in the l'-mile race. Pool Court finished in 2:04 and paid $45.20, $17, and $6.80. Five Star General returned $11.80 and $4.60, and Book of Kings $3.80. AQUEDUCT Island Charm, ridden by Jeff Fell, pulled away in the final eighth of a mile and won the $55,700 Level Best Handicap for 3-year-old fillies before a crowd of 31,876, the largest at the New York track since April 22. 1 978.

Much of the crowd was lured by the appearance of jockey Steve Cauthen, who rode much of last year in England and will return there today. Cauthen failed to win in five races. His best showings were two fourths, and one of them came on Hearts and Flowers, the 3-5 favorite in the seventh race. Cauthen was booed. In the Level Best, The Wheel Turns, followed closely by Darlin Momma, set the pace until the head of the stretch.

Then Darlin Momma took the lead briefly before Island Charm moved up on the outside to grab a 1 y4 -length victory over Lucky My Way. It was the winner's stakes' debut and her third consecutive victory. Island Charm, whose time for the I 116 miles was 1:46 'i, earned $33,420 and paid $4.40, $3.40 and $3.80. Lucky My Way returned $4.40 and $3.60, and Rose of Morn was $7.60 to show. most of the marathon event as Laffit Pincay kept Relaunch on the lead by about a half-length all the way to the stretch turn.

It was the third consecutive win in Louisville for "Kate," currently the top dog in the country. t. "You will never find the perfect dog, Jwt she comes as close to it as any I've jever seen," said Joe Tacker of Carmel, who judged best in show. "She jgives you a thrill every time you go over her or move her.

I've given Kate at least four best in shows, always in top competition. Her owners once thanked trie for putting Kate up, but I consider it a privilege to have her show under me. She's a neat animal." Kate is owned by Terri Meyers and Jack and Paulann Phelan of Manhattan, 111. Robert professional handler from Hammond, has had Kate since she was 4 months old and has always shown her. Kate's record stands at 111 best in shows and 211 non-sporting group firsts.

Her owners plan to continue her career long enough to try to break the all-time best-in-show record of 126. One of the six finalists competing with Kate for best in show was a Pembroke Welsh corgi from Louisville. Champion Pegasus Lori of Pennington, a 23-pound herding dog, defeated 575 competitors in capturing the working group. Lori was handled by her owner, Sue Vahaly. Champion Prelude's Echo, an English springer spaniel that is currently the top sporting dog in the country, won the, sporting group.

The best terrier was Ch. Terrikane's Tulliver, a wire fox terrier. The top toy was Leecroft Rocky Mountain High, a toy poodle shown in the open class. Another herding dog won the obedience trial. Car-A-Lam's Eze Rider UD, a Shetland sheepdog owned and handled by Anna Aranda of Tecumseh, was high in trial in the Open class with a score of 199.

Lori, a Pembroke Welsh corgi owned by Louisville's Sue Vahaly, won the working group at the Louisville Kennel Club show.
