29 THE TENHESSEAM, Tueodoy, April 17, 1979 Even Without Namath, Jets Din Rig "IN By GALE. D. ROBINETTE John (J.J.) Jones admits it he's no longer a part of the glamour and glitter of professional football. And still, he's a happy man. That's a bit ironic for the first New York Jets quarterback to ever bench Joe Namath.

It happened in 1975. In New York City, of all places. Jones, a two-time All-American from little Fisk University down in ol' Tennessee, was announced as the starting quarterback for the Jets against the San Diego Chargers. Sixty-five thousand mouths dropped open in 1 i i i V.lGVrtK 1 up 1 1 ii 1 i i I i' vf utter surprise. Jones' heart seemed to miss a thumn.

He'd spent the first season of his pro career sitting on the bench in Namath's shadow. Suddenly, J.J. tuac ctarriner of miortorh'solr in rSt V. "I'm in the National Football SoH Ffcofo by Da Loftin Course championships in East Los Angeles, Mary Ann Dempster, Coach Don Tolbot and Karinne Miller stop to accept the congratulations of porents and teammates.

Returning members of the Nashville Aquatic Club were greeted with enthusiasm and roses. From left, Tracy Caulkins, wjio broke five American records ot the National AAU Short League history book" the 27-year-'old Jones said yesterday, "as the first man to ever bench The 1974 Fisk graduate John (J Jones Happy With Responsibilities 'fr Major League Baseball entire first quarter before Namath was the took over. The Jets lost 28-13. "I dare say I'm not happier now than I was then because then I was making $4,000 a week. Now I have to be just like everybody else plan a budget and save money." He smiled before adding, "But what I'm doing now will make me a better person." The 6-2, 183-pound speedster and the Jets parted ways in 1976.

Jones ended up in Calgary with the Canadian Football League for two seasons. Last year, he donned a flashy three-piece suit. Now, it's Mr. Jones, security supervisor for Guardsmark, of Memphis. He also spends a considerable amount of time helping the United Negro College Fund raise money.

His mission in Nashville included being the featured speaker at Fisk's sports banquet last night. "I'm happy now because of the responsibility I have," he said. "I'm contributing to the economy. in pro football was of entertainment I people a chance to spend out and see a pro no more limousines, paid trips, or thousands cheering Jones on. he can live without that past.

Holiday Hearts IJtn Monday Morning Sleepers Christy Com. Hock 1904B: Up and Downers 451 Short Cuts IJ2L ii Sounds iV (From First Sports Page) who gave Nashville its only run when he balked Duane Walker home from third base with two outs in the fifth. The 22-year-old Chamberlain went all the way, walking one and striking out four. WALKER, RICK DUNCAN, and Dave Van Gorder had two hits apiece to account for the Sounds' offensive output. Back-to-back singles by Walker and Van Gorder and a sacrifice by Dawley put two runners in scoring position in the fifth before Chamberlain committed his balk and then retired Gary Redus on a ground out.

Dawley was in trouble in both the first and second innings, allowing two hits in each frame. Van Gorder erased one runner in the first when he shot down Dennis Webb on the only stolen base attempt of the game. The 21-year-old righthander retired eight straight before being stuck for back-to-back singles by Phil Westendorf and Dave Hog. An intentional walk then loaded the bases to set up Harris' game-tying single and Lombardo's entry. The Sounds and Suns meet again tonight at 6, Nashville time, in the second of a four-game series.

Lefthander Joe Price is scheduled to pitch for Nashville. 71. JackHenrytl.JohnBrientTO: EKU-Doug Brehme 73, Dive Gaer 78, Mike Frey 78. Dave ClemenU 71. Greg Waggoner 77; Morehead-Mike Reynolds 73.
