30 THE TtHHKSIAM, WadMttfcr, HoTt-bet 11, 1171, Journeyman Free Agent Dodgers Sign Derrel Thomas fc Bui Bid4 Bob Forsch Willie Stargell LOS ANGELES (AP) -The Los Angeles Dodgers announced yesterday the signing of free-agent Derrel Thomas, a veteran in-fielder-outfielder. Thomas, 27, a seven-year veteran, entered the free-agent pool this fall after playing out his option during the 1978 season. He began 1978 with the San Francisco Giants and was traded to the San Diego Padres during the season. Thomas, a journeyman better known for his glove than his bat, hit .227 last year in 128 games. He has only 27 homers in his career.

Three Dodgers pitcher Tommy John, outfielder Billy North and utilityman Lee Lacy played out their options last season and won't return. The National League champions did not bid on Wrestling Tonight Dutch Mantel I tcial Ref Spe Hot Stove Palaver JOHN CANDELARIA, THE Pittsburgh left-hander who slumped to 12-11 after being a 20-game winner in 1977, is playing winter baliin Puerto Rico. The Candy Man blames his trouble during the past season to marital problems. The prestigious Basebalf Digest has named Yankee pitcher Ron Guidry its Player of the Year, which surprises no one. What does, though, is that Pete Rose is the runnerup choice over Jim Rice, Dave Parker and Larry Bowa.

Must reading for baseball fans is "The Other Game," written by Ruth and Nolan Ryan. In case you missed it, Larry Sherry has been hired as pitching coach of the California Angels. Sherry and Jim Fregosi were roommates in Pittsburgh before the latter was named manager of the Angels early last season. Sherry's brother, Norm, formerly managed the Angels. Triva buffs are reminded that Rube Walker, the former NashVol who is now a coach for the New York Mets, was the Brooklyn catcher when Bobby Thomson hit his game-winning home run for the New York Giants in the third game of the 1951 National League playoffs.

Bob Forsch, author of the first National League no-hitter in St. Louis in 54 years, will be honored at that city's Sports Celebrity Night dinner Nov. 17. Forsch did it against the Philadelphia Phillies on April 16. DODGER PLAYERS WILL receive their National League championship rings on April 5 when they host San Diego in the season opener.

Incidentally, ticket prices for Dodger games will remain unchanged. How's that for fighting inflation? For What It's Worth Joe Nuxhall has signed a contract to continue in 1979 as a member of the Cincinnati Reds' radio network play-byplay broadcasting team. It will be the former pitcher's 13th consecutive year ia the Reds' broadcast booth. The club has never had a more loyal employee. Sal Bando is staying active during the off-season by serving on the board of directors for the Athletes for Youth in Milwaukee, a local program for inner-city youngsters in all sports.

The Brewers' third baseman reportedly is in line for a long-range business deal with a major beer company. Bando, who will turn 35 before he dons his uniform next spring, still has three years left on his contract. AP loMrpHoto LOS ANGELES Free agent Derrel Thomas, left, is shown around Dodger Stadium by manager Tommy Lasorda after Thomas signed a multi-year contract yesterday. Thomas, 27 a seven-year veteran, entered the free agent pool this fall after playing out his option during the 1978 season. He began the season with the San Francisco Giants and was traded to the San Diego Padres.

AT, Summers and Oester Lead Reds' 3-2 Win OSAKA, Japan (AP) Champ Summers and Ron Oester each drove in runs yesterday to help the Cincinnati Reds roll to their seventh straight exhibition victory, 3-2 over a combined Japanese team. The Reds jumped to a 3-0 lead after four innings on their way to their ninth victory against two losses and one tie in the 17-game tour. Junior Kennedy tripled home Summers in the second inning for the Reds' first run, then Summers doubled home Johnny Bench in, the fourth before scoring on Oester's single. The Japanese scored in the fifth when Mitsuya-su Hirano hit a home run off Fred Norman, Kyosuke Sasaki and Sadaharu Oh drew walks, and Shigero Takada singled for the second run. Norman struck out six batters and walked any'of them during the recent free-agent draft.

"We ve lost three players," said Dodger President Peter O'Malley. "We have to replace those players. When your ballplayers go somewhere else, you simply have to go out and get some. "We needed a utility infielder-outfieldcr because of losing Lacy and North, and Thomas is what we needed." It was the only the second time the Dodgers have signed a free agent. The other was relief pitcher Terry Forster, a star during the club drive to the pennant last summer.

O'Malley said the signing of Thomas does not mean the Dodgers will begin going after free agents and change their longstanding policy of developing players from within the Dodgers' extensive farm system. But, O'Malley cautioned, the Dodgers may yet sign other free agents. "We heard he was going to sign," said a Padres' spokesman. "We had contract discussions with him, but he wants to play regularly and be paid as a regular, and that wasn't in our plans." Sounds' Games Set For WA Radio Tbe Nashville Sounds have signed an agreement to have their 144 games next season broadcast on WKDA-AM (1240). Sounds president Larry Schmit-tou and WA station manager Vic Rumore made the announcement yesterday.

A play-by-play announcer has not yet been named. Last year the Sounds' game were carried over WMTS-FM from Murfreesboro. "We feel airing the games on KDA will allow more people to follow the team's progress, said Schmittou in making the announcement. More Sports On Page 40 The National League most valuable player as selected by the Baseball Writers' Association of America will be announced today. Dodger teammates Reggie Smith and Steve Garvey along with Pittsburgffs Dave Parker are the favorites.

Willie Stargell, the Pirates' 37-year-old comeback kid, figures he has two more years as an active player. That's why the Buccos gave everybody's favorite guy a tworyear contract call-: ing for about $500,000. Stargell batted .295, hit home runs and drove in 97 runs as the Pirates finished second in the National League East. Goodness! Boston third baseman Butch Hob-son, who underwent surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow, says he doesn't subscribe to a newspaper. No, it's not true that the 43 errors the third baseman committed last season is the reason he doesn't.

Like most members of the Red Sox, Butch is tired of answering people who want to know why the club lost the American League pennant to the New York Yankees. VIDA BLUE ISN'T going around bragging about being selected National League Pitcher of the Year by players in the senior circuit. In fact, the San Francisco lefthander had just as soon it never was mentioned. Blue, victim of a late-season slump, didn't even finish as the most effective pitcher on the Giants' staff. That honor went to another lefty, Bob Knepper.

And to make it more embarrassing it was Gaylord Perry, not Blue, who was voted the league Cy Young Award. Billy Williams will be back as roving minor league batting instructor for the Chicago The Sweet Swinger from Whistler, is hopefu of returning to the major leagues in the same capacity. Cardinal fans are reminded that new general manager John Claiborne says "no major trades are in development right now." That's good because the boys at my favorite watering hole in the Mound City have heard rumors that shortstop Garry Templeton and third baseman Ken Reitz will be wearing new uniforms next season. For Belt Bout Dutch Mantell will be the special referee tonight when Bobby Eaton challenges Randy Savage for the National Wrestling Alliance's MidAmerican heavyweight belt at Fairgrounds Arena. MANTELL, WHO formerly held the belt, lost it to the self-styled Macho Man.

He has indicated he will demand a return if Savage is successful in tonight's defense. A one-night elimination tournament for the brass knucks crown will also be held. Eleven matches will be held before No. 1 is decided. The only way a man can be eliminated is by knockout or submission.

The Mexican Angel, Gypsy Joe, The Beast, Tojo Yamamoto, An-gelo Pof Don Bass, Steve Brody, Disco Kid, Jimmy Rougeau, Chief Thundercloud, James Mason and Arvil Hutto are entered in the tournament. Ivery scored on runs of 73, 80 and 57 yards in breaking the mark of 350 set by Michigan State's Eric Allen in 1971. "I've never seen anything like it," said coach Pepper Rodgers.

"It was just a marvelous performance under those conditions." LINEMAN OF THE WEEK Kent Peyton, linebacker, Oregon State, made 13 tackles, recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass in the Beavers' 15-13 upset of UCLA. Peyton interception sealed UCLA's fate. "He also calls all our defenses and audibles at the line of scrimmage," says coach Craig Fertig, "and that is a contribution that does not show up in the statistics but was certainly one of the most important factors in our win." ft ft ft ft ft ft ft A few choice dealerships are still HERE'S available, it you wouia line ro om a YOUR Yokohama Dealer in your community. (From First Sports Page) come in the Vanderbilt secondary considering the fact that the Air Force lives up to its name by keeping the football airborne most of the game. "They have an excellent passing attack and an excellent quarterback who threw it well against us last year," said Jordan, referring to junior Dave Ziebart. "And knowing Coach Parcells like I do, I know that he'll have them ready." There is, of course, no assurance that Jordan will be able to play.

"If they take the cast off and look in there and find that it's still so bad that it wouldn't do me anv good to play, then I won't," Jordan said. No doubt, the experience of watching from the stands in Lexington, last Saturday as his teammates were thrashed by the Wildcats would be an added motivation for Jordan. 'I'd never watched a game from the stands before," said Jordan. "And it doesn't feel very good." Vanderbilt coach Fred Pancoast indicated yesterday that Kenny Cole has been returned to the starting noseguard spot while John Pointer, who started at noseguard last week, is back at linebacker. Rich Dean moves up to a starting defensive tackle spot.
