Hammond, like a cou practice field. "But I don't think about it now." Kats quarterback Andy Kelly is closing in on the AFL record for career touchdown passes. But Kelly said last week that his mind was locked on making a run at the Arena Bowl. Hammond, playing in his 10th season in the Arena League, said that he feels the same way. "No one on the team has ever said anything about the record to me," said Hammond, who is 6-foot-3 and weighs 220 pounds.

"All guys on the team are thinking about is winning next week and taking care of business." Kats Coach Pat Sperduto says that when he played in the early 'Ws, Hammond was a terror. "I've still got tape of when we played against him when he was with Albany," said Sperduto, who played for Tampa from 1991-94. "I was a tight end and he was playing defense. Fortunately I never had to deal with him much." He posted a 4.15 ERA with no decisions and struck out seven and walked four in 13 innings. He'd gone 1-5 with a 5.93 ERA in Pittsburgh before being sent down. Today's game: RHP Rob Matt-son (2-6, 4.85) starts for the Sounds today against Memphis RHP Fred Rath (4-3, 3.48). Game time is noon. Slammin': Brent Brede's pinch-hit grand slam in the 10-5 loss Monday to Memphis was just the third in the franchise's 23-year history, and the first at Greer Stadium.

Brede's hit also broke an 0-for-12 drought by Sounds pinch-hitters. The last Nashville pinch-hitter to get a hit was Brede, with a single at Colorado Springs on June 12. Slidin': With two strikeouts in his 0-for-3 performance last night, Sounds first baseman Alex Hernandez has struck out in seven straight games. Since his promotion from Dou-ble-A Altoona where he was hitting 334 with four home runs and 34 RBI on June 6, Hernandez is 5-for-56 (.089) with two doubles and a triple. By MAURICE PATT0N Sports riter After a 51-minute rain-induced wait last night, it was business as usual unfortunately for the Nashville Sounds. Clint Weibl and the Memphis bullpen limited the Sounds to just four hits as they lost for the 19th time in their last 25 games, by a score of 5-0. Now 10 games under .500 (34-44), Nashville fell to 2-12 over its last 14 games, and is 7-21 over its last 28 Greer Stadium contests.

The lack of offense offset a solid performance by starter Paul Ah Yat, who dropped to 1-2 despite scattering seven hits over seven innings and allowing just three runs. The Sounds were shut out for the 11th time this season and the eighth time at home. The visiting Redbirds took a 1-0 lead when Chris Richard doubled in the fourth inning and scored on F.mie Young's base hit. Young made it 2-0 with his 23rd home run of the season, a solo shot, in the sixth, and Chris Haas had a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh. Ex-Sounds outfielder Darrell Whitmore added a run-scoring double in the eighth off Nashville reliever Luis Andujar.

St Louis, 7 p.m. Flames interview Peterson By JOHN GLENNON Sports Writer Predators assistant Brent Peterson interviewed for the Calgary head coaching job yesterday. Peterson said he spent about four hours talking with Flames General Manager Craig Button, and that Button may have a decision on a new coach within the next couple of weeks. The job came open when the Flames fired Brian Sutter at the end of last seasoa "It was just a general, casual conversation and I enjoyed it," Peterson said. "He said he's already talked to one person and that he'll be talking to one more." Though Peterson wasn't told the other candidates, one reportedly is Don Hay, coach of the Western Hockey League's Tri-City Americans.

Peterson, a Calgary native and an 11-year NHL veteran, came to the Predators after coaching in the WHL for seven seasons. "It would be great to get this, but it's not the end of the world if I don't," he said. "I'm very happy where I am" Berehowsky back: The fteda-tors decided to exercise the option year on the contract of defense-man Drake Berehowsky yesterday. He will make the same $750,000 base salary next season as he did last season, but he will get an additional $50,000 since the team exercised the option. General manager David Poile and Berehowsky's agents talked about signing him to a new two- or three-year deal, but couldn't reach a longer-term agreement.

Both sides say they plan to continue negotiations for a longer deal during the offseason Berehowsky had a career offensive year last season, totaling 12 goals and 20 assists in 79 games. "I think he's improved to the point that he has confidence in his own game, and that maybe he can concentrate more on leadership ability," Poile said. Berehowsky could become an unrestricted free agent after two more seasons if he's not signed to a longer contract first. Prospect signed: The Predators also signed 1998 eight-round draft pick Martin Bartek to a three-year deal. The Slovakian native put up solid numbers with Moncton of rhn OiioKr1 rVf-iw-w Titiw eague last season, totaling 32 goals and 44 assists (76 points).

"Plus, we won't have to worry about them being called back to the big leagues once we get to Australia "The team will be mostly minor league guys, with maybe two or three 'seniors' at most and one or two college guys. The rest will be the 'four-A' type guys, the six-year minor league free agents and some of your top prospects, some members of 40-man rosters that aren't called up in September." According to Watson, the roster will be at 30 24 active players and six alternates by Aug. 23. In addition to Destrade, Watson is scheduled to see former major leaguers Terry Steinbach, Tim Raines, Milt Thompson and Pat Kelly in the next few days. Meanwhile, Destrade plans to continue with Hallmark no matter whether he makes the Olympic team.

"He's done everything we want to do," added Nick Hiter, who catches for Hallmark and just finished his freshman season at Trevecca "He's a really down-to-earth guy, he's good fundamentally, and he pushes us to do better. I think it'd be awesome if he made the Olympic team" WI St2V in MonfrsWi The Canadiens earned their glorious reputation by winning five straight Stanley Cups from 1956-60, four in five years from 1965-69, and then four straight from 1976-79. But the team lost money last year and missed the playoffs for a second consecutive season for the first time since 1922. Rising player salaries, a lack of playoff revenue, the weak Canadian dollar and high taxes on the Molson Centre, where the team plays, prompted the decisioa "It became very clear that given the current economic conditions in the NHL, it is almost impossible to be a sole owner and deliver a winning team," Daniel O'Neill, Molson's new president, said. 3 "I had broken a bone in my back, and it really affected me the last couple of years I played," said the Cuban native, who came to the United States at age 6 and gained his citizenship in 1989.

"My back's gotten a lot of rest, and I've always been into staying in shape. But there were still aspects of my game I had to check out. And this is a pretty competitive league. It's a good test." Hiter, coach of the Hallmark squad, brought Destrade on board as an assistant who also would play designated hitter. In six games, Destrade is batting .381 with two home runs and six RBI.

Leadership will be a big part of the evaluation for Watson, the former major league first baseman who served as general manager of the New York Yankees before taking on his role as co-chairman of the selection and steering committee for U.S. Olympic Baseball. "The whole idea of bringing on the recently retired guys is that they bring something to the table that a top prospect with more physical talent might not bring experience, maturity," said Watson, who watched Destrade take bat liniMllPllS TOf Sale. The Montreal Canadiens, whose tradition of 24 championships is surpassed in North America only by baseball's New York Yankees, were put on the market yesterday by Molson brewery.

Molsoa which has been associated with the Canadiens for 40 years, said it could no longer make money "given the current economic conditions in the NHL," and was selling so that it could concentrate on its beer business. The Canadiens won't be leaving town, however, because one condition of the sale is that the team must stay in Montreal.
