If sports was champ on Sunday, love conquered all in its path on Saturday when a special two-hour "Love Boat" cut off CBS's new "The Chisholms" series at the pass and shifted NBC's normally high-rated "CHiPs" into low gear.

"CHiPs" wound up in mediocre 39th place and "The Chisholms" were a miserable 55th. Among the second-season newcomers to the schedule, CBS's "House Calls" and "Knots Landing" did well, and the same could be said for NBC's "Skag." ABC's "BAD. Cats" and "Stone" did poorly. It is one of the ironies of the season that "Knots Landing" and "Skag" are competing head-to-head on Thursday nights at 9, each possibly drawing viewers from the other. Both were produced at Lorimar, which is stuck with every production company's nightmare of competing with itself.
