More than 70 cases against Lawrence Countians who have failed to pay a new solid waste disposal fee were on the docket of a default hearing this week. The cases were considered for default Tuesday, the first court proceeding in the county's attempt to collect a $50 yearly fee from each household. Last July, the county began charging each residence $50 for one year's usage of the landfill.

Corps of Engineers, he was born September 24, 1922 in Giles County. He graduated from Hume Fogg High School, served in the Eighth U.S. Army Air Force in England during World War IT, and graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Engineering in 1949. At Vanderbilt, Mr. Gray was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Honors Engineering Fraternity. He worked with the Nashville District, Corps of Engineers for 39 years--the last 15 as Chief of the Design Branch. His projects include: Cordell Hull, Old Hickory, Cheatham, Barkley, Cumerland River, Melvin Price, Smithland, Newbery, Cannelton, and Uniontown locks and dams; and the Tennessee Tombigbee barge canal. In 1986, Mr.

Gray travelled to Wuhan, China to advise Chinese engineers on design of ship locks for the Three Gorges Dam Project on the Yangtze River. This will be the largest dam ever built, and the earth's largest potential source of hydroelectric power. After retirement, Mr. Gray travelled as a consultant to Corps Projects in the U.S. and prepared engineering manuals on navigation locks and dams for Corps-wide use.

Awards include: The President of the United States Management Improvement Award from President Gerald R. Ford; The Department of the Army Decoration for Meritorious Civilian Service; and The Distinguished Civilian Employee Award. In 1999 Herman was inducted into the 'Quina' Society for 50 year Vanderbilt Graduates. Mr. Gray is preceded in death by his parents, William Edward Gray and Gray Elizabeth Parsons Gray, sister, Wilburn Edward Gray Callis, and brothers, William Pope Gray and Alley Parsons Gray.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Marie Logue West of Davidson County; a daughter, Patricia Ann West Baine of Nashville; two sons, Raymond Stanley West and Jetfrey Neal West, both of Nashville; a step-daughter, Wanda Jean Powell Lunn of Lyles; two sisters, Carolyn Faye Isabell and Wanda Hellmick, both of Mt. Pleasant; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Oakes Nichols with Rev. Larry Littlefield officiating.

'Smiley' Wilson on October 11, 1942. He died May 7, 1988. She is survived by her daughter, Rita Faye Sinks of Brock, TX, formerly of Nashville, TN; brother, Bobby G. Johnson, Marietta, GA. 'Smiley' and 'Kitty' Wilson starred for 14 years on WLAC-TV's 'Country Junction Early Morning TV They were favorites on the Louisiana Hayride before coming to Nashville, TN and the Grand Ole Opry.

Her music career spanned 52 years, working with such artists as Ferlin Husky, Jean Shepherd, The Louvin Brothers, Martha Carson, Cousin Jody, and Duke of Paducah. Mrs Wilson's remains rest at Cole Garrett Funeral Home, Goodlettsville, TN, where the family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. on Wednesday. The Funeral Service will be 11 A.M. Thursday at the Funeral Home, Reverend David Smith officiating.
