It was noted, however, that there has been no offieal end to the emergency declared when the British governor took over June 13, 1964, at the height of communal disorders. Prime Minister Forbes Burnham now can extend or end the emergency. Certainly for one to trust Christ means that one has the promise of continuing abundant life and joy. But, more importantly, when I think of Christ, I am compelled to think of the command that Christ has given to preach and teach so that men's lives might be changed. THE EARLY Christians had such a vigorous witness concerning their faith that they were referred to as "those that have turned the world upside down." Absolutely notl For me to know Christ is to take seriously His words when he said, "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace but a sword." In other words, I am a part of Christ's militant church, a group that wages a war to change men.

I admit that such a thought Is not pleasant to most people, especially in an age when it is more stylish to be tolerant which has come to imply being indifferent or merely neutral, which is actually a form of self-deception and mental paralysis. THE demanding call of "follow me" seems to fall on deaf ears in our. modern democracy where the idea of neutrality has gone so far that we have ceased to believe, out of mere fairness, in our own objectives. To know Christ is to be aware of a message which is relevant to everything in life if one will let it be relevant. One should be concerned not just about what happens in church on Sunday morning, but about the whole man as he is in the context of daily life.

This means being actively concerned with politics, race relations, and the whole spectrum of social problems. This also means that a Christian should be just as much a follower of Christ when he is sitting at the desk in his office as when he is sitting in the pew on Sunday morning. The point is that for me to know Christ is to be aware that I have a continuous relationship with Him regard-! less of time and place and performance. IN THE fall of 1964 I was i accepted at the University of I Louisville Medical School. I was considering the medical profession for the opportunities it affords to serve kind a Christian doctor has a great chance to minister to the whole man.

I chose to enter the ministry, however, because man's greatest need seems to be spiritual. In addition, I feel that my background and deepest interest make -me 1 1 equipped to serve in this capacity. Behind all that I have said is the feeling that. mere belief is not enough. To borrow an oft used phrase: we need commitment.

One way of stating the crucial difference between belief and commitment is to Bill Holmes, a senior at Vanderbilt University, is the author of the 17th in a series of Lenten articles sponsored by THE NASHVILLE TENSEANNES. A native of Louisville, Holmes is a philosophy major and will enter Southern Baptist Seminary at Louisville this fall. He is a member of the Vanderbilt Baptist Student Union and is a former member of APO Service Fraternity, WRVU campus radio station and the track team.
