WHITNEY'S Gleaming Sword, Saddle Rock Farm's Francie's Hat and Te Vega also galloped yesterday while trainer Tony Basile said he would send Bwamazon Farm's T. V. Commercial a mile today. "I'll ask for a mile in about 1:41, then we'll blow him out Friday. From there on in, I guess it's up to him," Basile said.

Like most of the trainers, Basile said the probability of a large Derby field it now shapes up as 16 gives "anybody in there a good shot at it. "I'D SAY it all depends on whose horse feels good Saturday afternoon and who gets the breaks," Basile said. Farm's Verbatim, Mrs. M. R.

Fisher's Proper Proof and Jig Time in the Derby Trial will be Te Vega, Sailor's Song, Big Ren, Duntroon, Port Digger, Keelo and Fun Maker. As the entries for the trial were being made. Dancer's Image was on the track, ignoring a stomach ache, working an eased up one-half-mile in 49 seconds. Trainer Lou Cavalaris laughed about reports that he might send the Wood Memorial winner in the Trial as a tightener. "1 learned my lesson on that last year," he said.

CAVALARIS brought Cool Reception to the 1967 Derby but bowed his head and went home when the colt didn't win the Trial. Don B. went seven furlongs blind in that cje," a tear, eyed Mrs. Keim said. The colt was hurt when he banged his head against a fence in the stable area.

REISER SAID he plans "to run Blarney Kiss here at Churchill Downs, but it won't be in the Derby. There's no chance of that." Mack Miller, trainer for En-Relhard's Craigwood EstatPs, said a decision would be made "within 48 hours on Alley Fiphter's Derby status, but we're planning to run Jit; Time for sure. "Alley Fighter came out of his last race the Blue Grass Stakes a little light. He just doesn't have the constitution of that gray horse. I sure wish he did," Miller said.

GOING WITH Elmendoif in I js 3-5 and out a mile in 1:42 3-S. J. L. Mosbacher was thp only trainer with definite Derby plans as the final week of preparation began. "He'll go in the big one no matter what he does in the Trial," the Califor-nian said.

TE VEGA, who hasn't raced since his place finish in the Arkansas Derby, still must earn a Derby start, trainer George Berthold said. "He's training better than he ever has in his life, though," he added. Meantime, the favorite for Derby honors, Calumet Farm's Forward Pass, galloped over the Churchill Downs track yesterday and trainer Henry Forrest said he planned a mile workout today. ALSO IN THE trial today will be Charles Engclhard's Jig Time, with jockey Earlie Fires instructed to trail the field early and make a late bid. Meantime, trainer Stanley Rieser withdrew Clifford Lus-sky's Blarney Kiss from any further Derby consideration, md Mary Keim confirmed hr Son 0' Swoon's eye injury will keep him out of the ll4-mile rlas.ir. Forward Pass only galloped and Forrest said: "I don't intend to blow him out." Bowling Results Possible Five Grays Seen In 94th Kentucky Derby LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Begging the pardon of the United States Military Academy, but Saturday's 94th running of the Kentucky Derby might look like the Long Gray Line. "I CAN'T REMEMBER five grays as possible starters before, not at this late date," says Allen W. "Doc" Lavin, director of racing at Churchill Downs. But five there are Dancer's Image, Gleaming Sword, Iron Ruler, Jig Time and Proper Proof.

"I can't recall even three," says Wathen R. Knebelkamp, president of Churchill Downs. "IN FACT, I KNOW there's never been three, and this will be my 48th Derby." Not only are the five grays possible starters, there's an excellent chance they'll all be in the starting gate for the big race Saturday. In fact, Peter Fuller's Dancer's Image rates as one of the favorites. The lack of grays to run in the Derby can be seen by the fact that only two have ever won Determine in 1954 and his son.

Decidedly, in 1962. ONE OF THE GREATEST grays nf all, Native Dancer, is the sire of Dancer's Image and Jig Time. Native Dancer lost only one race in his brilliant career, the 195.3 Derby when he was bumped at the start and finished second to Dark Star. PINNACLE I Ol'lSVILLE, Ky. (AP) Lots of people live to be 75 but not many can boast of watching that many Kentucky Derbies. "I CAN start boasting next Saturday," says Harry L. Waggener, who first watched the American classic in 1894. That was the year Chant won by 2' lengths and the next to last year that the Derby was run at the distance of Pit miles.

Juliet see the man who just had given up an empire to marry the woman he loved, the Duke of Windsor and his duchess. He says Swaps was the best horse he ever saw win the Derby, because "he set a new record every time he got on a track." But the race which really brings back a strong memory is the 1953 Derby. Waggener chuckles, some-w a ruefully, when he thinks back to that one. One entrant, Native Dancer, never had been beaten. "I GAVE the fellow I was with $20 to go down and buy me a ticket on Dark Star.

He said, 'Harry do you know what you're I said, "He said, 'That jockey who's riding Dark Star told me this morning that no horse in the world could beat Native "I said, 'Give me my $20 and I gave him $2 to buy me a ticket. "SO YOU know what, the difference was. The $2 ticket paid, I think, about $49, and the $20 ticket would have paid $490." But Waggener says he's learned at least one thing. From now on, he'll pick his own horse. "SOME OF them started asking me, 'Who won the Derby in such and such a They asked me three or four times, then I looked over and saw some of them passing money around.

"In a minute, some fellow tapped me on the shoulder and drew me off into the dining room and said, 'I'll give you $5 if you'll miss the next Waggener has a lot of memories of his 74 previous Derbies. HE REMEMBERS the 18 Derby won by Ben Brush. Waggener contends the actual winner was Ben Elder, but that, the judge on the finish line was intimidated by a group of liquored-up rail-birds pulling for Ben Brush, and decided thai maybe Ben Brush had a slight edge. Waggener still believes that a photo finish, something not around in those days, would have proven him right. He remembers the year the Earl of Derby, the English nobleman for whose ancestor the race was named, witnessed the Derby.

WAGGENER also re-nuuiiborti the year he pushed through a crowd to his first Derby the 21sl renewal of the Run for the Roses. HE RECALLS that the senior Waggener sealed him on a cupola in the stands when the were seated across the track from the now famous twin spires of the Downs. Now, Waggener, 86, watches the race from different placrs. "I had a box from the time they started selling them back in about 1918 or 1920," Waggener says, "but I didn't have any friends who cared much for racing so I sold my box several years ago." WAGGENER recalls with a chuckle how Thruston B. Morton, now a U.S.

Senator from Kentucky, used to try to catch him on an unremcmbeiTd Derby winner. He worked more than 40 years for Morion's grandfather in the family milling business and retired as its treasurer.
