Phils. 2, Penna. Fannie Hurst Finds Writing An Ecstasy, Anguish By BOB THOMAS AP Movie-TV Writer HOLLYWOOD W) "I find writing is an ecstasy and an an guish. I'm miserable when I'm doing it, but I can't wait to begin again." This helps explain why Fannie Hurst keeps turning out books aft er distinguished career that hai spanned four decades. Her auto- siography has just been released Dn the train to California, she pi 1 finishing touches on the lates of her many novels.

I complete each book, tell myself, it will be the she said. "But I know it isn't Every real writer has compul sion to write that transcend: everything." Even money, she added. writers have come to Hollywood and made so much money that proved foolish tax-wise for them to write books. Such would neve happen to Miss Hurst. "I came out here in the '30s I adapt she recalled "I quickly discovered that i was not the life for me and went back home." Home-is New York City, though she is St.

Louis-born. She went Columbia University for a ter's degree and be am enamored with the big city. guess I've become chauvinistic or insular," she admitted, "but I almost resent the time I'm 'away from New York." So what is she doing here? She agreed to journey westward for the hoopla surrounding the preview of the new version of "Imitation of Life." Rare among authors, she liked the job that Universal International did with her story. Miss Hurst's reacquaintance with her novels has not always been Among the film versions have been "Four Daughters" and its sequels, "Back Street" and "Humoresque," both filmed three times. "One night I was watching television and turned on a movie aft- tr it had started," she said.

"I watched the thing for 30 minutes oefore I finally realized it was 'Humoresque' (the Joan Crawford John Garfield version). When the pretty young girl walked into the Atlantic Ocean in the final reel, I realized there was nothing left of my original story except a boy who played a violin." Lebanon Daily News, Lebanon, Friday, February 20, 1959 Page 11 Can The Director" Is New Holly wood Game By VERNON SCOTT UPI Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD (UPI) There's a new pasttime in tinsel town. t's called "can the director." In the past few months four op-notch directors have found hemselves out on their ears in mid picture. Sometimes it's a cranky producer who drop-kicks them out in the cold, sometimes an irate star. Rouben Mamoulian set the pace A'hen Sam, Goldwyn kissed him oft during the filming of "Porgy and Bess." Next to go was Alexander Mac- He was booted off 'Devil's Discipline." Then Maron Brando had a falling out with director Stanley Kubrick deciding direct "One-Eyed Jacks" himself, leaving Kubrick at loose fids.

This week veteran Anthony Mann was unhorsed when he tangled with Kirk Douglas on the set of "Spartacus." Inasmuch as Douglas owns Bryna Productions (which is producing the film) and stars in the title role, Mann was out-gunned from the beginning. It worked out nicely for Kubrick, though. He took Mann's job at the helm of the 6-million-dollar epic. Denies Any Bitterness Tony denies there was bitterness in his leave taking. But there is no hiding the gruff voiced director's displeasure with the whole imbroglio.

"A director must be in control of his cast and crew at all limes," Tony said. "His attitude gives everyone confidence and security. Without these things a picture becomes utter chaos. always been able to gel along with actors before. But Mr.
