Matthews, Envoy To Ireland, Dies Had Formerly Served As Navy Secretary; Heart Attack Fatal OMAHA, Neb. -(P)- -Francis P. Matthews, ambassador Ireland and former secretary of the navy, died unexpectedly during a home town visit here yesterday. The 65-year-old envoy, Omaha attorney and prominent Roman Catholic layman, was stricken with a heart attack at 10:15 a.m. (EST) at his Omaha home and died a half hour later.

Matthews had been back in the United States since Sept. 16, but intended to return to Ireland next week. He disclosed only Friday, however, that he would quit the post at the end of this year and return to Omaha, "the only place on this earth that I want to live." Of Irish Descent Of Irish descent and a long-time friend of Ireland's Eamon De Valera, Matthews became ambassador at Dublin in July of last year after two years as navy secretary. The appointment May 15, 1949, to succeed Navy Secretary John L. Sullivan came at a time when many navy men were fearing service would suffer under the program of unifying the armed services, then in progress.

Matthews admitted his only nautical experience had been to man "a row boat at my summer But he promised to pursue the unification program while maintaining what he termed "the sublime traditions of the navy." When he left the post two years later, Matthews was able to sayand did -that the problems he found at the outset had been "solved." Gl Killed, 161 Injured As Truck Hits Squad AMARILLO, Texas (P) One airman was killed and 16 others injured Friday night when a pickup truck smashed into a formation of marching men on the Amarillo air force base. Among the 16 injured, Airman Darrell E. Meadows, 19, of Dover, Ohio, was in critical condition from a skull fracture, broken neck and fracture of both legs. Five others remained hospitalized, three of them in serious condition. All airmen, they were identified as John Toland, 22, of Tommey E. Watts, 21, Princeton, W.

and John D. Wiley, 20, Lynn, Mass. All suffered skull fractures. The other two whose condition was described as not serious are S. L.

Treaster, 19, Milroy, fractured hip, and Oran R. Casto. 21, Pickens, W. broken ankle. Army Sgt.

Billy F. Robertson, driver of the pickup truck, was under treatment for shock. He told authorities he did not see the formation until too late. "I hit my brakes, but by that time I must been in the middle of the squad," Robertson said. Descriptions Colorful She wrote colorful descriptions of the days when handsome carriages raced along Gallatin road and of the beautiful homes along that fashionable thoroughfare when East Nashville was known as Edgefield. Her letters told of her hearing famous artists perform in Nashville half a century ago, of the remembered, delicate beauty of the suspended bridge and the temporary pontoon bridge that preceded it. Always outspoken and forthright, Mrs. Hallum's letters often provoked heated discussions. Some of the letters replying to Mrs.

Hallum were sometimes critical of her and bitterly protesting, but Mrs. Hallum remained unperturbed, as she always did. Visited Newspaper Office She was once a visitor in THE TENNESSEAN editorial offices. A tiny little lady, she was almost totally deaf. Mrs.

Hallum attended the forum banquet last May and joined in the discussion with enthusiasm. Mrs. Hallum was a communicant of the Holy Name church. A sister, Mrs. W.
