MTSU, which opened with a 36-0 loss at North Alabama last week, was no match for the Mocs, who are favored to win their league championship for the fourth straight season. UT-CHATTANOOGA decided the issue early in the contest with two quick touchdowns in the first quarter. On their second possession, the Mocs drove 88 yards in only eight plays for the game's first score. Reserve Dennis King, getting the ball for the first time of the season, roared up the middle for a 47-yard touchdown run with 6:40 gone in the game.

Pbifer Howell booted the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Just three minutes later Tony Jackson caught a 43-yard pass from quarterback Steve Woods at the Middle Tennessee 2-yard line. Gwain Durden, another Moc reserve running back, scored on the next play and Howell missed the extra point for a 13-0 advantage. The UTC lead reached 20-0 with just 52 seconds gone in the second period as Woods hit Joe Burke with a 50-yard touchdown strike and Howell booted the point-after. MTSU SCORED its first touchdown of the 1980 campaign just before halftime following a fumble recovery by former Madison High standout Tim Dickerson at the Mocs' 11.

Jerry Lockhart took a pitch from quarterback Sammy Bryant and scooted 8 yards for the touchdown with 1:56 left before in: termission. Gerald Robinson kicked the extra point. MTSU, which made its initial first down with nine minutes left in the second quarter, gained only 98 yards total offense the first half. Most of that came in a 47-yard second quarter drive where Bryant reeled off runs of 25 and 11 yards. UTC had a dozen first downs in the opening half and 293 yards total offense.

MIDDLE HELD off the visitors in the third quarter, the Mocs finally scoring on a 21-yard field goal by Howell with 1:24 gone in the final period. A UTC pass interception by Richard Ward at the Blue Raider 45 yard line set up the ChattanoogansV only second half touchdown, an 11-yard run by Woods. THAT 3-0 lead stood up until the third; period when Jeff Hayes 'kicked a 22-yrd field goal to tie the score. In the opening minutes of the final period, North Carolina's defense came up with the first of its three stands which turned the game for the Tar Heels. Safety Steve Str eager intercepted a pass from Tech's Ron Reeves in the end zone to blunt the Raiders' go-ahead bid and two plays after the interception the Tar Heels moved the ball out to their own 41. FROM THERE Elkins avoided two defenders and rifled a throw to Bryant, who stepped inside cornerback Jim Hart and raced for a touchdown.

The conversion snap was mishandled. Tech had two more chances to pull out a victory. After North Carolina's TD -the Raiders were stopped, but a short punt by Tech's Maury Buford struck a Tar Heel player and the Raiders recovered. But North Carolina's defense forced Tech backwards 13 yards in three downs and brought about another Tech punt. TWO PLAYS after the Tar Heels took over, however, Tech safety Tate Randle intercepted a pass from Elkins and ran it from the 40 down to the Tar Heels 18.

Wes Hightower ran 11 yards to the North Carolina 7 and two additional running plays put the ball on the 2. But on third down Reeves pitched wildly and the Tar Heels recovered the loose ball to end Tech's final threat. It was the second win in two starts for North Carolina and the setback evened Tech's record at 1-1 0 aH You Get All TRS-8016IC Level II Line Printer IV Cable rV-J Zmmm 1 1 If 'h I If CZTZl I CHARGE IT 'if (MOST STORES) 16K Expansion Interface Reg.
