One of those days when we can forget the money, forget the agents and forget the politics. One of those days sport finally fulfills its promise. For nearly three hours on Saturday, Monica Seles and Steffi Graf, the No.

1 and No. 2 players in the world, layed their hearts on the slow red clay of Stadium Roland Garros, slugged it out toe-to-toe for every point and ultimately found themselves separated only by will. Unlike in their previous meetings, this time Graf was able to neutralize Seles' powerful groundstrokes with a brilliant strategy of hitting behind the champion, which kept her from anticipating the next shot and effectively slowed her down. The tension began to build to lofty levels with Seles leading at 5-3 in the third set and looking to close out the match, but Graf refused to quit and was able to break back and saved four match points on her serve to tie at 5-5. For the next six games, each point and each shot provided a drama not seen in tennis in over 20 years since the McEnroe wars.

Seles was trying to keep her hopes of a third-straight French Open crown alive, and Graf, also a two-time champion, was striving to regain hers. Although both players were visibly weary, the level of play increased as the stakes did. The two players traded service breaks and holds until Seles finally held to close out the match at 10-8. Having captured the Australian Open earlier in the year, Seles is now half way to a Grand Slam sweep and now faces her toughest test, the lightning quick grass courts at Wimbledon. The favorite to capture the Steffi Graff! In other French Open news, as expected, Jim Courier rolled over Petr Korda to take the men's title, and is also now halfway to the Grand Slam sweep.

Strange how three years ago we were talking about how an American man hadn't won a French Open title in over 30 years, and now we have won three in a row. And lest you think that tennis has no sense of humor, Michael Ventre of the Los Angeles Daily News says of Andre Agassi's new Buccaneer look, "It's symbolic, since he's preoccupied with traveling around the world and making off with large sums of money he doesn't deserve." And for the last word on the French Open, here is Jennifer Capriati on whether the clay courts are slower than last year. "Yeah. No, not that much different. I mean, I haven't really thought about it until now.

Maybe a little slower. I mean, no, the same. I don't know." Now that's definitive. This week's Tennis Tidbits player of the week is Kurt Carlsson, who swept his way tlirough yet another tournament, winning the Boys' 10 at the SCTA Summer Classic in convincing fashion. Carlsson gave up just seven games in six sets.

For some reason, I don't think that this is the last we will hear from Kurt. In other SCTA action, Liz and Dewayne Burford continued their undefeated ways, capturing a fourth-straight SCTA Mixed title, and Greg Bickell, finalist in the Hometown Tournament, lost a heartbreaker in the semifinals. In local tournament action, the draws for the Deerwood Tournament look to be at record levels, and the tournament schedule should be out by the middle of the week..
