Once completed, the tunnel will lead to the infield and pit area of the Wilson County track. Nashville Superspeedway is on track to be ready for racing in April 2001 June 20, 2000 7:00 p.m.

The track will open with 50,000 seats but will be designed to accommodate 100,000 seats if a Winston Cup race is secured at some point. Even if the track fails to land a Winston Cup race, its diverse range of racing potentially could attract hundreds of thousands of fans each year.

The track has 14-degree banking in the turns, nine-degree banking on the backstretch and five-degree banking on the frontstretch. All four turns at the five-eighths mile Nashville Speedway are 18 degrees. The new track, which ranges in width from 55-60 feet, is built for speed. Brooke estimated back-stretch speeds will be between 185-190 mph in stock cars. Indy Cars, which also may race here, will probably exceed 200 mph.

Brooke said DO construction workers are working 10-hour shifts, six days a week. He said the work force will be increased to 250 in a few weeks. So far, 4.5 million cubic tons of rock have been moved. While the majority of NASCAR tracks are paved with asphalt, Nashville Superspeedway's surface will be made of concrete. McGlynn's Dover Speedway also has a concrete racing surface.

In addition to the superspeedway, also situated on the site will be five other racetracks: a drag strip a short track a road course a dirt track a Legends track Brooke said the 1.5-mile road course will be completed by the time the superspeedway opens in April. I riere is no target date for completing the other tracks, although the NI IRA appears anxious to run a race on the drag strip. Booker said NI IRA officials recently visited the site. The short track will be completed in no more than three years. The Speedway's lease with the State Fairgrounds runs two more years after the current season, at which time McGlynn plans to transfer the local Saturday night races to the short track here.

Meanwhile, the superspeedway is all laid out Brooke took visi COMPLIMENTS OF By LARRY WOODY Sports Writer GLADEVILLE Amid the grunts and groans of giant earth-moving equipment, one of the nation's more diverse motorsports complexes is quickly taking form. Nashville Superspeedway is almost ready for paving. The 1.3-mile track is one of six racetracks that are part of the $125 million project. The superspeedway showpiece will be ready for racing in early April 2001, project coordinator Barry Brooke said yesterday. "Everything is on schedule," Brooke said.

"Denis McGlynn president of Dover Downs Entertainment which is developing the track was here yesterday and was pleased with the progress." The huge, state-of-the-art track will open with a NASCAR Busch Series race. Marketing campaigns are underway to fill the 50,000 seats. Construction on the grandstands is scheduled to start July 15.
