Randall went to the city in France and came back to the area to try to grow grapes. In 1889, a post office and wooden bridge was built there, and the area was named Bordeaux. Germantown, located on Clarksville Pike, was, as the name implies, settled by Germans, who earned a reputation for making wine. Whites Creek, as well as Whites Creek Pike and Whites Bend located north of Nashville, was named after Dr. James White, a wealthy and brilliant early settler, who represented the old Southwest Territory in the United States Congress between the years of 1790-1796.

Further north on Whites Creek Pike is a community called Joel-ton, named in honor of Joel Griffin, an owner of a large tract of land in the area. Goodlettsville, in the northwest corner of Davidson County, was named after Dr.

Adams Goodlett, a Presbyterian minister, in 1853. The Amqui community just south of Goodlettsville got its name from the contraction "damn quick." Railroad conductors passing through the switching station there use to say that was how long it would take to get to the switching station on Cayne Avenue, in downtown Nashville, from Amqui. Cayne Avenue is now 12th Avenue. Madison, south of Amqui, was named after one of the earliest settlers of the area, Madison Stratton. The community was established in 1840 when the three Stratton brothers, one of which was Madison, acquired land there.

Vaughns Gap, located west of Nashville on Highway 100, was named after Johnson Vaughn, a large landowner and early farmer who lived there in the mid-1800s.

Further west on Highway 100 is the small community Pasquo. The name came from settlers from North Carolina who had lived in a county called Pasquotank, an Indian name spelled Pask-e'tan-ki meaning a place where the current of a stream divides or forks. The community later divided into two communties, one called 1 Pasquo and the other called Tank. Tank no longer exists, but Pasquo remains. Bellevue was established by two Frenchmen, the De Moss brothers.

They settled on the river and named their home Bellevue, which means beautiful view. The De Moss' second home, called Bellevue II, is located on Old Harding Road. It is still standing and is a private residence. Situated west of Nashville on Highway 70 is a community called Newsom Station, named after the Newsom family. The Newsoms, of English descent, settled there sometime between 1796 and 1800.

The station was developed RANDOLPH'S Yakety Sax" Haywood was a man who loved the classics, therefore, he came up with the name Tusculum from the Latin name of some farms that were located on the outskirts of Rome and owned by wealthy Romans. Waverly Place, a community on 8th Avenue South, was the name of a farm and home owned by A.W. Putnam, a great-grandson of the revolutionary hero Israel Putnam. The name of the home, which war located on Benton Avenue, was taken from the works of Sir Walter Scott. Berry Hill, which incorporated in 1950, was named after the Berry family who had a home across from where the Metro Board of Education is now located on Bransford Avenue.

The incorporated community known as Oak Hill derived its name from a home of the same name that was built by Van Leer Kirkman, sometime after the Civil War. The Cheek family, who ground the first Maxwell House coffee and then sold the rights to it to General Mills, bought the property later and tore down the Kirkman house to erect another home, which is still standing. It is located next to the Presbyterian Church on Franklin Road. Green Hills and Forest Hills were named because of the surrounding terrain hills and woods. Forest Hills was incorporated in 1957.

Belle Meade, which means beautiful meadow, was named after a plantation built by John Harding in 1807. He started off with 250 acres and log cabins which soon grew into 5,300 acres and a mansion. In 1904, tracts of land of the plantation were sold, which stimulated development of the community. Belle Meade incorporated in 1938. West Meade was a part of the Belle Meade plantation.

Mud Tavern, located in east Davidson County, was named for the little tavern there that was either made of mud or looked like it was made of mud.

-The small building, situated where Elm Hill Pike crosses McGavock Pike, was used as a rendezvous point for the pioneers who went on the Nickajack expedition against the Cherokee and Chick-amauga Indians in 1794. The army formed there and marched to Murfreesboro and on to the southern Indian towns. Donelson, also in east Davidson County, was once known as Spring Place and Slip Up. The springs there would overflow and freeze, making the wagons slide. Donelson is named after Col.

John Donelson, who traveled up the Stones River from Nashville to settle there with his family and about 30 slaves in 1780. They built crude cabins on the high ground off Lebanon Road. Because of an Indian uprising, the Donelson family moved back to Kentucky after residing in the area for only a short time. On Murfreesboro Road, just past the Metro airport, is a small village called Una. The area was first known as Rowesdale, but was renamed Una after a beautiful young women who, while attending Peabody College around the turn of the century, visited the store there.

Her name was Una Jones and she so charmed the residents that they renamed the village after her. Antioch, located in southeast Davidson County, got its name from the Antioch Baptist Church founded in the area in 1810. It is a biblical name, deriving from the passage in the Bible which states, "the diciples were first num. a 4: The village of Antioch did not Igrow much until about 1851, when the railroad came through.
