In lieu of flowers make contributions to the Heart Fund. K. GARDNER SON, DIRECTORS memorating Aaron Douglas, prominent artist, muralist, illustrator and founder of the Fisk University art department, will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Fisk Memorial Chapel. Douglas, who died in Nashville Feb.

2 at the age of 79, was recognized as the leading artist of the Harlem Renaissance, a term widely used to denote the extensive literary creativity of the New Negro movement that arose in the 1920s. HE WAS internationally known for elevating black pride and culture with his many acclaimed works. A native of Topeka, Douglas came to Nashville in 1929. He taught art at Fisk and was chairman of the art department from 1937 until his retirement in 1966. Douglas attended the Universities of Kansas and Nebraska and Columbia University.

While at Columbia he studied mural decoration under Winold Reiss, which lead to his painting the now-famous murals' at Fisk in 1930. AMONG THE honors Douglas valued most were his Rosenwald Fellowship (1938), a retrospective exhibition (showing of his earlier works) in his native Topeka at the Mulvane Art Center in 1970, and the honorary doctor of fine artsxlegree bestowed on him by Fisk in 1973. Douglas' work was included in the exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, for which David Driskell, his successor as chairman of the Fisk art department, was curator, and is included in the film Profiles of Black Achievement. In 1971 national attention was focused on Douglas by a retrospective exhibition of his paintings in the Fisk Carl Van Vechten Gallery of Fine Arts.

IN PAYING tribute to Douglas, Fisk President Walter J. Leonard said, "Aaron Douglas was one of the most accomplished of the interpreters of our institutions and cultural values. He captured the strength and quickness of the young; he translated the memories of the old; and he projected the determination of the inspired and the courageous." Memorial contributions may be made to the Aaron Douglas Scholarship Fund at Fisk University. The public is invited to the Aaron Douglas Harlem Renaissance Mis. Ophelia Motlow, Of Distillery Family, Dies LYNCHBURG, Tenn.

Mrs. Ophelia Evans Motlow, 95, whose family once controlled the Jack Daniel Distillery here, died yesterday in Park View Hospital, Nashville. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Lynchburg Cemetery. The body is at Harrison Funeral Home.

Mrs. Motlow's husband, Lem Motlow, who died in 1947, once headed the famous distillery. Reagor Motlow, a son who died last year, was a longtime member of the State Senate. The Motlow family donated the land for Motlow State Community College near here. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs.

Mary Avon Boyd, Lexington; two sons, D.E. (Hap), Nashville, and Connor Motlow, Lynchburg; a sister, Mrs. Mary Bobo, Lynchburg; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Blaze Heavily Damages East Nashville Boat Plant A two-alarm fire of undetermined origin heavily damaged a boat manufacturing plant in East Nashville last night. Firefighters fought the blaze at Crane Manufacturing 1101 VV.

Kirkland for about an hour before bringing it under control. Numerous boats in varying stages of construction were destroyed or substantially damaged. One fireman was treated for smoke inhalation and a strong odor from the blazing building caused firefighters problems in breathing. The block-long building received heavy damage in about half the plant, according to Capt. Paul Hunt of the Fire Department.
