Maplewood moved into a tie for second in the league at 5-3. the outcome as Coach Gerald Johnson's crew rolled to a 38-22 halftime advantage and coasted home for the win.

Gayle Kinzer added 18 for the Tigerettes, now 11-1, while the Pearl guards limited usually high-scoring Pam Covington to only 11 points. Maplewood's girls gained their second win of the season over rival McGavock last night, but it was a little tougher the second time around. It took a basket by Ashonda Bashaw in the closing seconds to give the visiting Pantherettes a 4644 triumph after winning 76-52 in an earlier meeting at the Maplewood gym. MCGAVOCK got off a desperation shot in the last second to no avail after battling to a 25-24 lead at intermission. Bashaw and Neesie Mullins hit for 16 apiece to lead Maplewood while Tonya Jennings added a dozen.

Charlotte Speak-man and Eve Little had 20 and 18, respectively, for the Raiderettes. Maplewood is now 84 overall while McGavock is 64. Both teams are chasing unbeaten Mt. Juliet in the District 12 title race. AT MCGAVOCK (44) Little 18, Speakman 20, Flatt 6.

Council Vote Authorizes Baseball Park By DOUG HALL The Metro Council voted last night to authorize Vanderbilt baseball coach Larry Schmittou to build a baseball stadium at Ft. Negley Park to accomodate a professional baseball team. Schmittou said after the council action he believes the stadium will be successful because "I believe in Nashville and its sports fans." ALTHOUGH the contract with Schmittou must be approved once more by the council on third and final reading, it is expected to pass routinely with little or no debate.

Plans for the stadium, expected to cost about $500,000, encountered only scattered opposition from council members, primarily those who opposed the sale of beer at baseball games. Schmittou told the council he and his company, Nashville Baseball Club could not proceed with the project if they were not allowed to sell beer. COUNCILMAN Philip Sadler, noting the "unpleasant experiences" in several major league stadiums last summer, said Metro Government should not allow "this type of activity to take place in such a public area, on property it owns." The council amended the contract with Schmit tou last night to specify that beer be sold only at professional baseball games and not at other activities which may be held at the stadium. Schmittou must still apply to the Metro Beer Board to obtain a beer license. Schmittou disclosed after last night's meeting that he has pledges to buy $200 season tickets for the 1978 season totalling about 20 of the $500,000 goal.

He said a full-scale drive to sell the tickets will begin soon, but no money will be collected until he secures final approval for the project from the government. THE STADIUM proposed by Schmittou would seat 6,325 persons and include concession and locker room facilities. Schmittou said he has been in touch with major league baseball teams in Minnesota, Toronto and Boston, and he feels confident he can secure a franchise for a Double A or Triple A minor league team. Under the contract approved last night, Schmittou must pay property taxes totalling $9,600 a year to the government for the term of the 11-year lease. If the baseball team fails financially, the stadium would become the property of the government.
