Must be a secret space weapon. something to rocket ext-generation spy gear i nto orbit. Or maybe a decoy to keep military guessing. he purpose of the mil- i space plane is class ified, only fueling speculation about why it has been circling Earth for nearly two years on this, he third mission.

The plane was exp ected to land as soon as Wednesday at Vandenberg Air Force Base, about 130miles northwest of Los Angeles. Here are some quest ions, and a few answers, about the X-37B: What do we know about it? The X-37B program has been an orphan of orts, bouncing since its inception in 1999 between everal federal agencies. It now resides under the Air Rapid Capabilities Office. There are two of these robotic planes, and the one due to land launched on the back of an Atlas rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Dec.11, 2012. It stands 9.5feet tall and is just over 29 feet ong, with a wingspan less than 15 feet.

It weighs 1 1,000 pounds. And it has solar panels that unfurl to charge its batteries once in orbit. And what we know? A Just about everything else. For starters, what it has been doing up in space. Speculation centers on the idea that its relatively small cargo bay was used to ferry sensors that can capture detailed images or communications on Earth for example to track nuclear program, or suspected ter- orists.

That makes sense to Harvard University as- rophysicist Jonathan McDowell, who notes that any device could be returned, allowing scien- ists to build a better model based on the wear and ear it experienced. Another theory, favored by veteran space policy analyst John Pike, is that the program is designed to the Chinese a brain trying to figure out what for. Under that thinking, China would have to spend (and waste) time and re- sources trying to counteract a range of possibili- ies. What are some of the I nternet theories? It can grab another satellites. Or just sidle up and inspect them a close range.

Or shadow space lab. McD owell and Pike say none of these is likely. What is the Air Force saying about this mission? Not much, other than that the craft will land soon: The exact timing depends on and weather Space plane inspires speculation By Justin Pritchard Associated Press VANDENBERG AIR FORCE Technicians examine the X-37B unmanned space plane Dec.3, 2010, at Vandenberg Air Force ase, Calif.
