Multiple use proposed for Elkhorn Ridge area By KEITH MICHAUD Journal Staff Writer A Harwood Wood Products official said today roughly 1,000 letters supporting multiple use of the Elkhorn Ridge arid Canto Peak area would be delivered this afternoon to the Ukiah office of the Bureau of Land Management. Frank Sanderson, risk manager and public relations spokesman for the Willits and Branscomb based company, said today the letters are being delivered to the federal agency as part of scoping information required to determine the fate of the timberland. BLM was recently forced to hold scoping meetings and to reevaluate its stand on the area west of Laytonville because of environmental protests. Environmentalists argue the area should be considered a wilderness area and protected from logging and road construction. BLM had originally said the land did not fall into the protected category and had Fannie Riggs of Ukiah; step son-in-law Walter Hays of Middletown; step granddaughters Barbara Feltes of Calistoga and Corann Hays of Santa Rosa; step grandson William Hays of California; four step great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and step nieces and husbands Marjorie and Curtis Gilley of Ukiah and Ellamay and Corkey Murray of Cloverdale.

Inurnment will be at Skyview Memorial Lawn in Vallejo. Eversole Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements. County forecast California summary Low clouds and fog along the coast with local drizzle. Other protests and a federal court injunction caused the agency to reconsider and it is in the midst of gathering information on what should be studied. The BLM is preparing an activity plan and environmental impact statement for 17,200 acres of public land it controls in Mendocino County, including the timberland in the Elkhom Ridge and Cahto Peak area. Sanderson said the letters urge BLM to allow multiple use on the land. That would include recreational vehicle use on the land and also possibly timber cutting, said Sanderson. A BLM spokeswoman today the scoping portion of the study will end Aug.

30. BLM will consider the public comments and then prepare a draft plan by mid- November. Continued from Page 1 Napa where fairways also surround vineyards. Kellcy and the Fetzers said the course would remain public, and that green fees would be about $20 for 18 holes. Kelley said the national average for public courses is about $35.

Ukiah Municipal Golf Course green fees are less than half of what would be charged at the Valley Oaks Golf Course. John Fetzer said no new buildings would be built as part of the project. Several ponds will be built on the course and used for irrigation of the links, the vineyards and for landscaping, said John Fetzer. As with much of the -mile stretch of Valley Oaks, Dan Fetzer will organically grow the grapes within the course, eliminating fears herbicides and pesticides would be used. The vineyards around the Valley Oaks food and wine center and an 80-acre garden grown there for Sundial Grill and the Hopland Farms store in Hopland are all organically grown.

The Fetzers said organic farming is also used at their Redwood Valley gardens, not far from where the wine business began nearly two decades ago. The business has reportedly spent about $10 million in recent years to expand its Mendocino County vineyard winery. Although many of the main offices remain at the Redwood Valley facilities, Fetzer Vineyards has put much of its recent efforts into developing the company's new Hopland winery, within sight of the proposed course and the food and wine center. The center's wine and culinary courses are already 80 percent booked for next year, said John Fetzer. Estimates of the cost of building the golf course range between $2 million and $3 million.

Kelley said the course will likely employ 10 to 15 people to maintain the course and to provide clubhouse services after construction is completed. John Fetzer said the company is giving Kelley's Chico-based business, Financial Golf Network, a long-term lease on the land. The family does not expect to see direct financial benefits from the lease for at least 10 years. He said the food and wine center would benefit greatly from the addition of the golf course. Zoning of the property allows for a golf course and Fetzer Vineyards needs only to get a use permit approved by the county planning commission to build the course.

Continuous Daily Doors Open 12:45 mid-90s. Lows in ihe 50s to lower 60s. Much of northern California will have a chance of rain tonight and early Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

An upper level area of low pressure was dropping southward from the Gulf of Alaska and was expected to bring rain to the north coast later today. Central California is expected to be to the south of the rain belt, and will have continued fair and mild weather inland. Extensive cloudiness will continue near the coast. The fog and cloud blanket along the northern and central California coastal areas produced some local drizzle near the ocean early today. Over inland areas of northwestern California a few high clouds were moving in ahead of the approaching weather system this morning.

At sunrise, temperatures were mostly in the 50s ths morning at the lower elevations. High temperatures Monday ranged from the mid-50s on the cloudy north coast to the 90s in the central valley. The California weather included to have a great range, from a low Monday morning of 30 at Truckee to 111 at Death Valley.
