11-C of the LecIt THETENNESSEAN, Sunday, Oct. 14, 1973 After siv wpeks of Dlav. Assignment: NIL if elected new secretary of the-M id 1 Tennessee Interscholastic Wrestling Association at its first meeting last week. Former Pearl coach Jim Turbevillo was named to assign all the officials. Midstate teams will be included in the local leagues this season and a new junior high loop has been formed due to the increased participation.

The MTIWA also is setting, up several coaching clinics for next month. By TOM SQUIRES there is no doubt that the Nashville Interscholastic League is enjoying another successful football season. Three teams remain with perfect records Overton (5-0), McGavock (6-0), and Goodlettsville (6-0). All are making strong bids for state playoff spots. OVERTON WAS the top-rated team in last week's state Action Ratings and McGavock was third.

Goodlettsville was ranked as the best Class AA club in Tennessee. Five other NIL teams have just one loss In six games and four more have respectable 4-2 records. In all, more than 10 local squads are sure bets to reach the seven-win the five teams, Baylor and Overton are the consensus picks to reach the TSSAA playoff finals. Eaststate sports writers favor Coach Red Etter's Baylor squad, which lost to Bristol in last year's finals. "They're big and fast and have runover everybody they've played," said one Chattanooga reporter.

''Thev completely two-platoon, including kickoff and punting teams. They dress 86 boys." The Red Raiders haven't come close to being tested, which is Coach Etter's main concern. Almost all of their points scored this season have come in the first half and reserves have played the rest of the way. Overton's Jimmy Gaylor didn't waste any time trying to break his new NIL field goal distance record of 42 yards. Against North, he had a 55-yard attempt hit tha crossbar and bounce back.

Gaylor didn't know it at the close to losing his record. Hendersonville's Kenny Priest attempted a 46-yarder on the last play of the game with Ryan and it was a couple of feet wide to the right. The state's list of unbeaten teams has been trimmed to 26 following losses last week to Memphis Bartlctt, Carver, Maryville, Milan, Walland, Joelton, and White House. The TSSAA is keeping a close eye on the new tiebreaker procedure, to the extent that information hs 6ent to the state office from officials involved in every tie game. After the first five weeks of the 1973 season, there had been 30 ties out of ap-proximately 650 contests, a realtively low percentage.

The TSSAA would like to have statistics available in case the new rule is discussed at the annual National Federation meeting or the state's regional meetings. Ken Berry of Dupont was Hillsboro, Hendersonville, Maplewood, East, Glencliff, Dupont, and Joelton the next few weeks along with the three playoff hopefuls. AGAINST midstate opposition, the NIL has a surprising 22-13 winning edge and is 29-15 in all non-league contests. Central, Baylor, plateau. Tenn. (AP) -Freshman Bobby Ward scored a touchdown on a 62 yard pass play and set up two others with a 40-yard kickoff return and a crucial catch as the Memphis State Tigers defeated Tulsa 28-16 last night. ANOTHER freshman, corner-back Eric Harris, intercepted a pass and bolted 30 yards for another touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the victory, the Tigers' fourth against two losses. Tulsa, the nation's top passing team going into the game, fell to 3-2. Harris' theft of quarterback Joe McCulIey's pass came after the Hurricane had scored touchdowns on consecutive possessions to cut their deficit to 21-16.

Steve Kipp got both touchdowns on runs of five and two yards. TULSA SCORED in the third quarter after an 80-yard drive and after Mack Lancaster's fumble recovery at the Tiger 18. Woods, who just last spring won the state outdoor mile run title, set a new meet and course record with his time and also finished ahead of defending state cross country champ Jon Slaughter of An-tioch. Slaughter stopped half way through the run to remove a stone which was lodged in his track spikes and could never regain the lead he lost to Woods.
