For one thing, he lost three or four teeth in the Kansas game when he blocked a field goal try, and is hurting from it. In the second, his wife's grandmother died over the weekend and he attended her funeral yesterday in Alabama. Spiva, an Atlanta boy, becomes the sixth freshman to join the Tennessee varsity.

All the others played in the Kansas game, and some of them considerably. MURDIC, WHO replaces Rabenstein at cor nerback, gave the Vols a big lift when he went into the" Kansas game. He has mor speed and quickness than Rabenstein and is considered more effective against the pass. John played at Franklin High and now lives in Nashville. Rabenstein, a sophomore, is a tougher cornerback against a running team.

Wilson and Chancey join Killian as definitely out of the Tech game. Watts is questionable, and likely to be held out of action if at all possible. Stall photo by Dal Ernsber9r game against the Vanderbilt Jaycee team last Friday," said Battle, partially explaining his promotion. Andy is a rangy, quick linebacker who gives Tennessee a little more coverage on passes, and against Tech, there will be plenty of passes. Jim Stevens is the Jacket quarterback and his forte is throwing.

The move came Just before practice began, and with it, the coaches cancelled an earlier decision to move Ron McCartney back to linebacker. Ron was moved to end last week and did a good job against Kansas. He stays there. Athletics and Reds Are Favored Today STATELINE, Nev. (UPI) -Harrah's Tahoe Racebook yesterday listed the Cincinnati Reds and Oakland A's as favorites to win the National and American League playoff games today.

"Cincinnati was picked as a 13-10 choice to even the series against the New York Mets and Oakland was listed as a 7-5 favorite over Baltimore. By F. M. WILLIAMS John Murdic, who went to Tennessee without a scholarship, and Andy Spiva, a freshman who could have had one anywhere, moved into potential starting positions as the injury-riddled Vols began practice for Georgia Tech yesterday. COACH BILL Battle made a number of other personnel shifts before a light practice session, including the move of Paul Johnson from center to weak side tackle to replace Gene Killian, who suffered a knee injury in the 28-27 victory over Kansas, and will be lost for the season.

Ernie Ward was running at strong safety in place of Jim Watts, Terry Moore at No. 2 fullback in place of Steve Chancey, and Mike DeMastus at No. 2 replacing Johnson. Battle, still singing praises for his team's "great courage and great character" in its comeback victory over the Jayhawks, also named captains for the Tech game. THEY WILL be Eddie Brown, the all-around hero of the Kansas win, Haskel Stan-back, whose great running near the end produced two touchdowns, and David Shaffer, offensive tackle.

Music City Getting Ready Country Cenrlemen William C. Weaver and Irving Waugh, both of WSM, receive kits from Marion Holder, left, and Jeane Pigue, hostesses for the Music City Pro-Celebrity Coif Tournament which starts 9 three-day run Friday at Harpeth Hills. One of the highlights on opening day is a clinic. rare scotch DAVID BRADY had to go the rest of the way after Killian got hurt, and will be right behind Johnson for the remainder of this season. Phil Doolin and Joe Gallagher, de- Mickey Marvin, an offensive guard, and Stanley Morgan, a wide receiver, saw less time.

All of remained on the varsity squad yesterday. There was something of a surprise in Spiva moving to No. 1, ahead of Bill Ban-demier, who is a sophomore. They fill the spot that Hank Walter has been playing, with Walter moving to Wilson's strong side linebacking hole. Sifford has won in excess of $300,000 in official PGA money and sees no reason to consider retirement. "I don't have anything else to do.

Why not play golf?" Tournament: Motorcycle daredevil Evcl Knievel will not foe able to make it to the Music City Tournament. Knievel is hospitalized in Appleton, where he fell during a highspeed jump Sunday. Evcl suffered back injuries, a fractured bone in his left hand and possible kidney damage. Evel's invitation hinged on his good health which obviously isn't so good. Hale Irwin, the former Colorado defensive halfback who has won $102,000 on the PGA tour this year, says that pro golf is more pressurized than football.

"It's tougher," he said, "because in golf the pressure just keeps building throughout the round. In football you can let off steam by belting some guy." Dick Sobel, of National nnn 0 ti a a 4 fe li Life, is returning to handle the Music City tournament scoreboard this year and he has the most comprehensive board in the nation. Sobel not only posts golf scores, but draws big crowds to his board for collegiate football results on Saturday, pro football scores on Sunday and inning-by-inning accounts of the World Series. 0 Veteran tour player Billy Maxwell is the only pro not from this area who has played in all nine Music City USA Pro- Celebrity Tournaments. Maxwell, a favorite here, has won more than $400,000 since turning pro in 1955.

He then gave away the prize money. Nicklaus, whose victory was the 50th of his career on the PGA tour, won by six shots over runnerup Lee Trevino, who had a final round of three under fi8 for a 277 total. Tom Weiskopf, who was paired with Nicklaus and Trevino in a dream final round matchup, finished tied for third with Andy North at 281 after shooting an even par 71. North had a two under 69 in the final round.

Nicklaus, however, did not accept his prize money. Instead he turned it back to the sponsors with the stipulation that $3,000 of it go to the Boy Scouts and $20,000 be used to establish a scholarship fund at Ohio State University, Nicklaus' alma mater, in the name of his late father, Charles, who died When you need a battery, you need it now. Since then, however, Atlanta has not been able to score a single touchdown in 12 quarters. Shiner, once the hero who had thrown three touchdown passes against New Orleans, has been ineffective.

Uob Lee, the man Van Brocklin traded to get from Minnesota, replaced Shiner Sunday, and it was reported that Shiner had injured his shoulder. Though Lee seemed to be making some difference, he underthrew a receiver on fourth and one to stop Atlanta's drive at the 49er 19-yard line late in the game. Falcon fans have wondered what happened to Pat Sullivan, former Heisman trophy winner from Auburn who has been on the taxi squad all season after starting the first Atlanta preseason game. Perhaps you noticed Sullivan on television Sunday. He was far away from the huddle squabble, dressed in shorts and carrying a dipboard on the sidelines.

IjUrvLY LAST week Falcon owner Rankin Smith declared Sullivan would be activated by the San Francisco game. Later a reporter asked Van Brocklin who his quarterback would be and was told to ask Rankin Smith for that sort of information. Obviously things have soured in Atlanta. Strangely, it has happened when the Falcons seemed to have their best chance ever for a division title. Folks in Atlanta expect Van Brocklin to be gone before long.

There were signs proclaiming "Goodbye Dutch" in honor of Van Brocklin Sunday. Yesterday, however, Falcon owner Smith said he has no intention of firing Van Brocklin. "If he loses 14 games in a row, that's time to talk about it," Smith reportedly said. It appears everybody has been silenced by those $1,000 fines. Ex-Tennessee Tech running back Larry Schreiber may require surgery for the knee injury he sustained while running for the 49ers Sunday against Atlanta.

Schreiber has started all four 49ers' games. Bonnie Sloan, former Austin Peay defensive tackle, is expected to be out two to three more weeks recuperating from a knee injury he sustained in the St. Louis Cardinals' opening game with Philadelphia. Sloan is a rookie. fes fekj Chevron Oil Company Chevron Oil Company.
