THE TENNESSEAN, Sur4y. Aug. 1973 1-40 Bridge Dedicated After Political Disclaimers THINK OF IT AS SAVING MONEY! AND CONSERVING ENERGY Mississippi River in the new, five-mile bridge for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. THE BRIDGE, six years in the building, was opened two weeks ago as part of Inter-. state 40 running across the two states.

It was closed to traffic for three hours again yesterday for the ceremony. Completion of the bridge was almost the last link of 140 in the two states with the exception of a hotly-debated portion planned for midtown Overton Park in Memphis. Environmentalists have been fighting that plan in the courts for more than a dozen years and Dunn told the news conference that "we must complete that segment through the park because it is right." "Please don't get me involved in Tennessee's politics," chuckled Bumpers when asked about the Overton Park route. Congress)," Dunn said in answer to reports that he might challenge Democratic Rep. Richard Fulton.

"But I am not actively seeking any post now. I just want to be a good governor of Tennessee." DUNN DID not mention Fulton by name but left no doubts that he would not run against Republican Rep. Dan Kuy-kendall of Memphis. "I think Memphis has one of the most outstanding men in Congress," said Dunn, who also is from Memphis. Bumpers scotched reports that he might seek the seat of Rep.

Wilbur Mills, who is reported to be ailing and considering giving up Washington after his present term. The two governors later joined a crowd of more than 300 Arkansas and Tennessee officials high over the 1T-WIC. Summertime heat raises the temperature in your attic to 150' or more. Dale Bumpers each disclaimed yesterday immediate aims on higher political office then joined in dedicating the $57 million Hernando De Soto Bridge over the Mississippi River. "At this time, I'd have to say I'm not interested," Democrat Bumpers told newsmen.

"I didn't start those rumors," he laughed in answer to a question about reports that both he and Democratic Gov. Reubin Askew of Florida might be high on the party list for the 1976 national ticket. Bumpers, who just relinquished the prestigious position of chairman of the National Governors' Caucus, was joined by Dunn, who will take over soon as chairman of the National Republican Governors' Caucus. The generosity of the founder of the John H. Harland Co.

has made 50 employes of the check printing firm here approximately $50,000 richer, officials said yesterday. Bill Worthley, manager of the Nashville branch at 1826 Elm Hill Pike, said employes here were notified Thursday that they will share in $1.1 million in stock which Harland is giving his 1,500 employes. HARLAND, 88, chairman of the board of directors for the Atlanta-based firm, is an Irish immigrant who started the company as a small trade shop in 1923. The firm now has 19 branches, including the Nashville plant which opened here 20 years ago. Under his personal supervision the company has become the second largest check printing operation in the United States.

Worthley said about 2,000 of the total 38.623 shares released by Harland will go to persons employed by the firm here for no less thjn two yars. He said th stock is valued at $25 per share. Those who attempted early gardening and have such crops as tomatoes, eggplant, okra, peppers and perhaps squash might very well extend the productivity period for these plants simply by adding additional plant food and water. In the case of tomatoes esDeciallv. additional explained that the stock will be divided among employes on a scale of 10 shares per year, up to 100 shares. The Nashville manager said five employes here are eligible for the maximum $2,500 in company stock. Explaining that approximately 45 other em- ployes will receive lesser amounts, Worthley identified the five recipients as: Billy Proctors, pressman, 3725 Turley Drive.

Mrs. Vivian Corley, billing clerk, 4814 Danby Drive. Howard Hulett, pressman, 2203 Drive. Mrs. Elsie Sandefur, office manager, 1006 Kirby Drive.

Dean Greenwood, supervisor, 1428 Mohawk Trail. Worthley said employes will have the option of selling their stock or "holding onto it" for a while. Explaining his reasons for distributing the stock, Harland said the primary reason for his "closeness to employes" could be traced back to payroll procedures used for years after the company was started. "One reason this company has always been more like a family than a workshop is that in the beginning I always went to each person to pay them," Harland said. Bell Reopening In Soddy Area SODDY, Tenn.

South Central Bell will open a new central telephone office here today to serve the Soddy-Daisy area, replacing an installation destroyed by a firebomb March 31. The explosion and fire temporarily halted' telephone service to some 3,600 customers in the northern Hamilton County area and cut off long distance service in several neighboring communities as well. EMERGENCY service was restored to fire, police and medical facilities within 18 hours of the explosion and work on the new central office had begun when full service was restored, through the Chaftannopa ppntral office. two weeks later. Completion of a complete central office, from initial planning through the inauguration of service, would normally take about Vk years, V.

The suit maintains that Menchere was negligent in the mishap, which resulted in the deaths of Martin's daughter Carolyn, 19, and Martha Quinn, 19, of Clarksville. Police said the auto left Old Hichwav 48 on a curve, over turned and burst into flames, trapping the two girls inside. Menchero apparently was thrown from the vehicle, but received burns on his hands and face while trying to free the girls, officers said.

In case of no rain, then the plant food should be soaked into the soil with water. The same is true with the other plants mentioned. There is no reason that okra will not produce until frost provided the pods are kept cut off and there is ample moisture.

Of course, there are certain things that might be planted now with favorable results. If cabbage plants can be located and are considered frost resistant, there is still time remaining to grow cabbage. Nearly all types of greens, including lettuce, may still be planted with success. In order to have turnips, in addition to turnip greens, they should be planted within the next couple of weeks. Again water and plant food are the keys to successful production.

Among the greens which might be considered are spinach, turnip, mustard and kale. Head lettuce will even grow in late fall. However, unless the plants are available, it isn't likely that you can grow the plants and produce lettuce prior to freezing temperatures. There is nothing to be lost in planting late varieties of squash even now. They may not produce but the chances are fairly good.

The same is true for rapid growing bush-type beans. Where moisture is available, beans will germinate in a period of three to four days. With adequate plant food and moisture, they grow fast and produce in 60 to 70 days. I have never been one to recommend that everyone plow up their back lawn and attempt to grow vegetables. It can be done, but it isn't easy.

At the same time, it takes a certain amount of know-how for success. Whether or not such expenditure and trouble contributes to the family budget depends to a degree on how much value you place on the pleasure of seeing things grow. One point we should all keep in mind is that for the past 25 years food of the finest quality and unlimited quantity at a very favorable price has been available to most people to the extent that the lack of appreciation has become a rule. Our present situation may change this.
