Shivers Missing in Tie Innocents' By CLARA HIERONYMUS A tale, twice told, lost viiine of it powers. This is true of "The Innocents," a new play based on Henry James' "Turn of the Screw'' and currently In production at the Circle Theater. It opened last night against richly atmospheric setting that conveys well the heavy stolid Rloom of an 1S80 interior. The cast is talented, the director professional, but the play in a day when' Freudian linpo has long been" in the popular vernacular is impossible to take seriously. SET! IN THE drawing room nf country house in Enshind (and Jay Turman's acepe design does evoke the feeling of bin house with ninny silent, ruld, sluit-up rooms), it concerns the effect of evil on two young, orphaned children.

In the recent past they had come under the influence of two unprincipled servants now dead but often materializing as threatening ghosts, visible now and then not only to the children but to the housekeeper and the newly arrived governess. As the past is revealed the governess prows fearful and hysterical. Her efforts to exorcise the "demons" and "get through" to the children make up the action of the play and lead to its poetic and rather dated climax. AS A YOUNG governess on her first job, touchingly eager and ml IiumhmI when arrives, and increasingly harassed and terrorized by two strange children and a stranger garden, a a a Izard gives a beautiful emotional performance. She seems to change physically from the sparkling and pretty youth-fulness of her first scene, to a drained, middle-aged woman who has replaced gaiety with a brittle, hard won strength.

Shirley Dunn's elderly housekeeper is a tense, fiercely loyal woman, wracked by dark memories but determined not to see any wrong in the children. As for the children themselves Sandra Locke succeeds in convincing us that she is an 11-year old. She is small, graceful, wide-eyed, and possessed of a. remarkably wcll-disci- plim rl voice that skirls cloying ingenuousness. SHE TAKES THE measure of her governess with a coolly impudent stare and different manner, and leaves the audience wondering if she is all little girl innocence or a witch in pinafore and hair-bow.

Credibility is pushed to the breaking point with Cordon Anderson's Miles, the 13-year old boy whose life has been irretrievably confused by a corrupt adult. Anderson is a skilful performer, but here he gives one the impression that he is a male counterpart of Alice in Wonderland who'd wandered through the wrong keyhole and come up as an over-large Pierrot in a Little Boy Blue suit. He is too big to be acceptable Time Magazine minted a NASHVILLE TENNESSEAN editorial and reprinted a cartoon by THE TENNESSEAN'S in the June 19 issue. The Time article appeared in "The Press" section. It reviewed newspaper comment in the country to the growing support for Barry Goldwater to get the Republican nomination in July.

The Little cartoon orMnnllv appeared in THE TENNESSEAN June 4, the morning af.or the California primary which was won bv Goldwater. Time quoted THE TENNESSEAN editorial which said: "What little identification with the 20th century the Republican party has been able to achieve was shattered by the galloping hooves of Senator Goldwater's horseback program." as a 13-year old; his costumes are babyish, and he makes a Marceau-ish caricature of the role with body gestures and facial movement and an incredibly irritating vocal style. ARTFUL LIGHTING and sound execution, and the use of the foyer for the parden-and-ghost effects heighten its dramatic quality, but for all its earnestness the sound and fury seem to signify very little. "The Innocents" will continue through Sunday. There will be no performance June 22, but the run of the show will be resumed June 23 through 28.
