like Kenneth Lawson to try to forget about the war. Some 19,000 Americans died in the Battle of the Bulge, one of the largest land battles of World War II, and more than 400,000 Americans were killed in World War n. "We don't talk much about said Sam Visintine, a mess sergeant who served with Lawson in the Battle of the Bulge. Visintine now lives in Belleville, 111., where he was interviewed by telephone. Movies like "Saving Private Ryan" and a new World War II memorial in Washington have renewed veterans' memories of battles in recent years.

"I give all my credit to the Lord," Kenneth Lawson said before tears ended his remarks. "Why he spared me, I'll never know." 500 students i heed rumor of trouble at N. Bullitt Continued from Page 1 1 Newman, a junior. Twelve students and a teacher were killed by two teen-age gunmen in a 1999 shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo. The gunmen then killed themselves.

Twenty-six others were injured. Hillview police and a Bullitt Coun; ty sheriff's deputy spent most of the day at the school meeting with con-' cerned parents and patrolling the halls, Korwatch said. The rumors began shortly after a group of students formed a gang five weeks ago, Korwatch said. The students were not involved in "any of the unseemly activities gangs are associated with," but another student thought it would be funny to invent a rival gang, he said. The student, whom Korwatch did not name, wrote out a list of students who would supposedly constitute the rival gang.

This list became the source of rumors regarding a hit list. School officials, Hillview police and the Bullitt County Sheriff's Department have been investigating the gang and list, which a parent turned over to police. Hillview police have interviewed more than 40 students and dozens of parents in the past few weeks. Most students were shocked and angry when police told them they were mentioned on a list as rival gang members, said Jesse, the police chief. School officials thought the issue was fading until Korwatch, Bullitt County Superintendent Michael Eber-baugh and Jesse began receiving telephone calls Thursday night from parents and students saying "that someone was going to be shooting at the school," Korwatch said.

"Unfortunately an individual or individuals have chosen to throw some gasoline on the fire and exacerbate the situation," he said. "What we are dealing with is the mass hysteria they have created." If the people who started the rumors are discovered, they will be punished, said Patrick Shockeyi North Bullitt's assistant DrinciDal. But the student who made the list will not be punished because it was created to make fun of the students who formed the gang, not out of ma licious intent, Korwatch said. Students who left early yesterday were asked to sign a sheet. School officials said they didn't know if the absences would be excused.

"Right now we're going to sit down, evaluate the situation and see where we want to go from here," Shockey said. Bullitt County sheriff's Deputy John Meyer, the county school resource officer, said he will be at North Bullitt all next week. The Bullitt County Board of Education declined to comment. Negligence suit over uncovered sewer reinstated Associated Press FRANKFORT, Ky. A lawsuit by a pedestrian injured when she stepped into an uncovered storm sewer was reinstated yesterday against the Metropolitan Sewer District of Louisville and Jefferson County- A Jefferson Circuit Court order dismissing the suit was reversed by the Kentucky Court of Appeals.

A three-judge panel said a jury should decide whether the sewer district breached a duty to repair broken grates. Sarah F. Cox sued for negligence after she was injured in 1994. There was evidence the grate had been broken or missing for a long time, the appeals court said. The suit was dismissed under a statute that grants immunity for damage caused by failure to make an inspection.

The sewer district had no grate-inspection program. The appeals court said the statute does not apply to a municipality's duty to maintain its property. "Like all private property owners, MSD has a duty to keep its property in a reasonably safe condition," it said. Judge Wilfrid A. Schroder of Covington wrote the opinion.
