4-D THE TENNISSEAN, Sundoy, September 29, 1974 Memphis State USC Often se I a 1 Tops 6-7 Pitt Defe nse 1 By JEFF HANNA Tranrtsraa Sports Writer Makes CSU 20-18 Victim FORT COLLINS, Colo. -( AP) Sophomore running J. back Reuben Gibson ran for 107 yards and one touchdown to lead Memphis State to a 20-18 nonconference college football victory over Colorado State yesterday. Gibson teamed with 160-pound freshman running back Runt Moon to give the Tigers a potent running attack that pressured CSU up until late in the game. PITTSBURGH When it was finally done and Southern California had proven it could survive its own failures to beat Pitt 16-7 here yesterday, Panther head coach John Majors hopped up on a table and began his assessments by saying: "I don't know where to begin." THAT, IT SEEMS, was Pitt's problem all afternoon.

The Panthers never knew where to begin as Southern Cal's Trojans, seeking to regain some of the esteem lost by an opening game setback to Arkansas two weeks ago, pushed the young Panthers all over the Oakland section of this city. The miracle of it was the scoreboard. USC controlled the football for 45 of the 60 minutes. USC ran 87 offensive plays to 34 for Pitt. USC had 452 yards in total offense to just 111 for Pitt.

Yet, the Panthers actually led on the scoreboard for more than half the game. "It seemed like we had the ball for a week in the third quarter and every time I looked up at the scoreboard we were behind," said USC coach John McKay. "There's an old saying that position is more important than possession," said Majors. "We never had position. We were always looking at an 85 or 90 yard drive." USC OPENED the scoring in the first quarter with a 25-yard field goal by Chris Limahelu after Pitt's defense held the Trojans at the Panther six for four The Panthers scored their touchdown and had their only sustained drive early in the second quarter after safety Mike Bulino intercepted a Pat Haden pass at the USC 45.

On the first play after the interception, Pitt's All-American sophomore running star Tony Dorsett broke through for a 23-yard gain. It was on that play that Dorsett became -the leading ground-gainer in Pitt history. But it was also more than half of the yardage Dorsett got all afternoon. He gained 59 yards in 15 carries while his USC counterpart Anthony Davis had 149 yards in 33 carries for a convincing victory in that individual battle. After Dorsett 's run Pitt moved forthe score on an 11-yard pass from Bill Daniels to Karl Farmer.

That was the only time all afternoon that Pitt's offensive unit saw the USC side of the 50-yard line. THE TROJANS SPENT the rest of the second quarter and all of the third showing it could keep the ball inside Pitt's 15 and still not score a Once the Trojans had fourth down and about the length of a chin strap to go and failed on a Haden sneak. Later in the second period Haden was knocked unconscious and left the game with a concussion. Haden's replacement, Vince Evans, twice fumbled inside the Pitt 10 and the Panthers recovered both times. In fact, USC was inside the Pitt 15 six of the eight times it had the football in the first three quarters and still managed just three points.

The Trojans finally did score after a 69-yard Pitt punt that Majors thought might have turned the momentum in the Panthers direction. It did not as USC drove 80 yards in 13 plays with Davis scoring from the two early in the fourth quarter. LATER IN THE FOURTH PERIOD Evans rolled around left end for a 13-yard touchdown run that was the clincher. "We had the ball so much offensively that the two teams that got tired were our offensive team and their defensive unit," said McKay. "I feel a little better than I did after Arkansas because now we're 50-50." Pitt is 2-1 now and Majors was not downcast about the defeat.

"I'm not going to lose hope now," he said. "We just need to go back to work. We know what we've got to do. And the first thing is to concentrate on the next eight games." Attendence for the game was 52,934 persons. Memphis State jumped to a 10-0 lead late in the second quarter when Gibson rammed over from five yards out.

The Tigers opened the scoring when Bobby liams connected on a 30-yard field goal early in the first' period. The Rams scored their lone first half points on a 29-yard field goal. But Memphis State regained its momentum late in the period when James Thompson grabbed a five-yard scoring pass from quarterback David Fowler, That score gave the Tigers 17-3 half time lead. After a 77-yard Memphis -State drive opening the third period stalled at the three- yard line when a field goal snap was hobbled, the Rams began rallying. The Fighting Irish, 4-0 after a 35-6 win over Hill-wood last Thursday, is the state's top-ranked high school football team according to the Tennessean Action Ratings.

Overton, the defending Region 3 champs, owns a 3-0 mark after ripping Clarks-ville 38-7 Friday night and was the state's second-ranked club in last week's ratings. The two Western Division clubs met under identical circumstances last year at Vandy before 16,000 fans and Overton rolled to a 29-6 win. It was one of 11 straight victories and propelled the Bobcats to the semifinals of the TSSAA Class AAA state playoffs. Vanderbilt's Commodores are idle this week and a crowd of 20,000 is expected for the high school game. Sixteen other games are scheduled next weekend, including a big Eastern Division duel between third-rated Maplewood and Stratford.

The Huskies, who adjusted to the devastating Aggie. sweep at half time, pulled to within 21-15 in the final period, but quarterback David Walker began to take to the air and drove the Texans 72 yards in 17 plays to put the game out of reach. (From First Sports Page) DESTRUCTION was total, because, while the big Auburn defense was scuttling a Tennessee offense that had looked so good in other games, the Auburn offense was riddling the Vol defense, which had been suspect, although stingy with points, all along.

The Tigers, led by a sophomore quarterback named Phil Gargis and a host of running backs like Secdrick Mclntyre, Mitzi Jackson, second string quarterback Chris Vacarella, and an oddity by the name of Kenny Burks, rushed for 268 yards and picked up 51 more on passes which they used remarkably well, but only when needed. The reason Burks is listed as an oddity is that he ran only six times, gained only 18 yards but scored all three touchdowns for the Tigers. THEY CAME on runs of four yards, following a 75-yard drive in the second quarter; of two yards, following a 43-yard drive in the fourth quarter; and on a three-yard run when Auburn thwarted a Tennessee gamble on fourth and a half yard to go at the Vol 42, then moved to their final, score with six minutes left. One other touchdown was nullified by a fumble by Mclntyre and another threat ended at the UT 12 when Jackson fumbled, i "We save Burks for scoring plays," said Coach Jordan, when asked if he wasn't concerned that his critics might want to know why he 13 good football because it was so wet. But our players thought it was meant to be insulting, and we didn't try to discourage that." JORDAN SAID field position, which his team seized at the beginning and maintained until the end, was a factor in the dominance of the game.

Battle said it was the difference. "Every time we got it, we had to go 80 or more yards to score and every time they had it, they had to go 40 or 50," said the Vol coach. HE REFUSED to alibi for what was his 10th defeat and first shutout since he became Tennessee's head coach. This was his 51st game. The last time Tennessee failed to score was against Ole Miss in 1969, when the Vols lost 38 to 0.

"There was nothing wrong with Condredge Hol-loway," said Battle. "The field was great, the fans were great, everything was great except us. "WE FAILED to get some things done we thought we could do and we're going to have to find out why," he said. "I'm going to find out and I'm going to do something about it." Battle met for a prolonged time with his players, and be said he told them that Auburn was better prepared for the game than Tennessee. "I also told them there is nothing we can do about today, but we have to do something about next week, and the rest of the season," he said.

One of the things he said he wants to find out is "who the fighters are." HOUSTON-VPI BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) Houston's Cougars used a balanced attack, including two touchdowns by sophomore fullback John Hous-man, for an overwhelming 49-12 football victory over Virginia Tech's overmatched Gobblers. Gallatin Rips Sparta 28-6. GALLATIN Gallatin shut out previously-unbeaten Sparta 28-0 here last night, as the Green Wave pulled off a major upset of the state's 8th-ranked Class AAA team. The victory boosted the Gallatin record to 3-1 for the season.

Gallatin racked up 316 yards rushing, with big Mike Hollerman grinding out 120 of them in 13 carries. Tobby Cully hit 10 of 22 passes for 116 yards to highlight the Sparta effort. BUT THE coach, in a more serious mood, said the Tiger offense was designed to go right at the Vols and he added that "from tackle to tackle, our offensive line sure must have been blowing them out of there." "Tennessee has such great lateral pursuit, so much speed, we didn't want to fool around with the wide stuff." he said. "We have had more success with them running straight at them." It was reminiscent of 1972, when Jordan brought an underdog Auburn team to Birmingham, rammed the tackles play-after-play on an 80-yard drive, and then hung on to beat Tennessee 10-6. This was the fourth time in five years that the Tigers walloped the Vols, the exception being last year in a rainstorm in Knoxville, 21 to 0. JORDAN THOUGHT that licking had something to do with the dominance his team showed yesterday before an overflow crowd of 64,293. "We take pride in playing a great team like Tennessee, a great football organization and a great tradition, and I don't think our players forgot how bad they looked last year," the coach admitted.

Asked if the fact that Tennessee had kicked on first down last year had anything to do with the temper of the Tigers in this one, Jordan said: I'd like to say there was nothing insulting meant by coach Battle when he kicked on first down. Under 12 FREE! "WE OUGHT to be able to tell that, because there were plenty of opportunities to fight today," he added. Holloway, who missed last week's game against Kansas with a bruised shoulder and knee, played most of the way yesterday. Randy Wallace spelled him for three series of downs. The little senior quarterback had one of his poorest days, hitting only four of 10 passes for 41 yards and winding up with a minus one yard on four funs. "I'D LIKE to think our defense had something to do with Holloway not having one of his better games," said Jordan.

"But don't take anything away from him. He great. Jackson and Mclntyre who were part of a black player revolt that lasted couple of days here last spring, were Auburn leading rushers with 73 and 54 yards. "Jackson has matured and is now the great runner we thought he would be," said Jordan. Tennessee takes its 1-1-1 record against Tulsa in Knoxville next Saturday while Auburn tangles with tough Miami on Friday night.

The Tigers are 3-0, and their coach thinks they are just as good a football team as that record indicates. "This one will give us a lot of confidence and make us a much, much better team," Jordan said.
