Owens dies, was Herald-Leader publisher By RICHARD WILSON The Co LEXINGTON. Ky. Lewis E. Owens, 64, publisher emeritus of the Lexington Herald-Leader newspaper, died at his home yesterday after an illness. He was 64.

Owens joined the Herald-Leader in 1975 as advertising director, was promoted to vice president sales and marketing, then became vice president and general manager. He was named president and publisher in 1988, a post he held until September 1996, when he went on long-term disability for health reasons and became publisher emeritus. Timothy M. Kelly, the newspaper's president and publisher, called Owens "a wonderful man who will be remembered warmly by all those he came in contact with. He was an exceptional publisher and did enormous good in the community, often behind the scenes and without receiving During Owens' tenure as the Herald-Leader's publisher, the newspaper won its second Pulitzer Prize.

He was a widely respected community leader who received numerous civic awards. When he left the newspaper in 1996, Owens was serving on nearly 30 boards and organizations. The Lewis E. Owens Fund was established within the Blue Grass Community Foundation to recognize his public service. Among the numerous awards Owens received, was the John S.

Knight Gold Medal in 1996, KnightRidder's highest honor. Owens was elected to the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the Lexington Arts Cultural Council's Apollo Award in 1992. Owens began his newspaper career at the Fort Worth (Texas) Press in 1956 as a retail advertising salesman. He moved to Knight Newspapers (now Knight-Ridder) in 1962, rising through the ranks at papers in Charlotte, N.C., and Tallahassee, before going to Lexington. Survivors include his wife.

Janetta Owens: sons Michael. Robert and Eddie Owens; and stepson, Wade Mitchell. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Southland Christian Church in Jessamine County. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m.
