Rain And Hail led. A sub station of the Public Service about four miles south burned up. Trucks of Public Service and the Telephone Company were stuck in the mud when they were called out on service repairs. The Deming Fire Department was without telephone service from about 7 p.m. Monday night until 9 a.m.

Tuesday. Firemen said they called for repairs from about 7:30 p.m. until 11 p.m., but were told the workers all were out on other repairs. However, Coleman Forester, manager, said he was working on the telephone for the fire department and en many others. Telephone crews have been working from 5 a.

m. until about 10 p. daily since Tuesday night repairing line failures. Two, 100- pack cables were out of service, Forester estimated some phones were in need of repair service. He said the final telephone was taken care of Thursday afternoon.

Telephone poles and power poles were damaged by the heavy rains. Out east of town, at the Kretek place, water rose around the big dyke to within 14 inches of overflowing. In some scattered sections there were reports of as much as four inches of rain Tuesday night In Deming it started at about 8:80 p.m.; rained hard for about two hours and continued raining until after midnight. Dowdle then turned to Babera and declared that "You (Babers) told me yourself that you had pledged yourself to the sheriff's department" (in the last election). Babers vigorously denied that he had ever pledged himself to anyone and asserted that all he had ever said on that matter was that he thought no changes in the police department would he Trustee Flores then asserted that under the present conditions "If I were Pinky or Hi, I wouldn't have the job." Regular Meeting Newland then said that Weddeli's appointment was a carry over proposition and that Dowdle had the right to make appointments as he sees fit and the man selected would go on the payroll immediately He said that the appointment of a new chief would be temporary until the next regular meeting when the Board of Trustees would have to approve or disapprove the appointment.

that time the new chief i is either confirmed or he goes off the payroll," Newland Babers then contended that the Village couldn't have two chiefs of police. Dowdle said the old one (Weddell) never had been appointed. He said Weddell was a holdover and "I relieved him of his Turning again to Babers, Dowdie asked: "Do you think it's right for the police department to tack up, political signs on telephone poles? Do you think it is right to have one of our policemen twisted up in a telephone wire while someone takes his gun from him in a bar?" (It was disclosd at the meeting that the latter event actually happened and apparently was common knowledge among the Trustees bus no action was taken.) Would Match Records Babers countered that he would like the records to be brought up to date "And 1 would like to put Chief Weddell's record as police chief up against the record of any other chief." Village Clerk Ed Hooten said he didn't believe that was necessary "I think you would win on that one." Flores, in an attempt to get the question settled, said the Board ought to come to some decision. He said he hadn't talked to Lane about it, "but we have to get this straightened it's a mess." Newland then offered to make a legal opinion on the question for the record. lie said it was his inion that Samples is a temporary chief of police until the Trustees act on his appointment at the next regular meeting. He said his inion was that Weddell is no longer on the Village payroll. He said he believed that under the statute the Mayor had the power to make the appointment and that at the next regular meeting the Trustees must either approve or disapprove. He said during that time Dowdle could appoint Weddell a deputy if he wanted to.

Dowdle said he would stick by his appointment of Samples until the next regular meeting "and Hi (Weddell) is out until action is taken at that time." As the meeting ended Babers still wanted to know under what authority Dowdle acted to relieve Weddell of his duties NOTICE OF SALE OF SCHOOL BONDS OF DEMING MUNICIPAL SCHOOL DISTRICT LUNA COUNTY, NEW MEXICO, NOTICE IS HEREBY that sealed bids will be received on the 14th day of August, 1952 at hour of 2:00 P.
