Shirley went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, uly 5, 2014 hile residing at Centerville Care Center, Centerville SD. Before being married Shirley worked as a school teacher. On June 1st 1957 Shirley was married to Walford Samuelson.

Shirley and Sammy worked together on their farm south of Centerville raising grain and livestock until death in November 1984, aged 60 years. Throughout her adult life, Shirley was active in the Dalesburg Lutheran and Komstad Churches. After death Shirley stayed on the farm and with the help of her many friends and neighbors continued to manage her farm successfully. In October of 1994 Shirley married Elsworth Edman of Centerville, SD. They shared a life together living on the Edman farm just east of Centerville until death in August of 2002.

step-children are; Laurie Greenough and husband Steve of Sioux Falls, SD, Linda Pledge and her husband Joel of ackson, TN. and Lynn Edman of Centerville who passed in 2011. grandchildren are Abby Luebbers Greenough, Bethany Pledge Erickson, Lindsay Pledge Freyer and Maggie Edman. Shirley also has 5 great-grandchildren, Rah erty and Sophia Luebbers, Audrey and Austin Erickson, Jacob and Lilyana Freyer. All of us are thankful for having Shirley as an important member of our family these 20 years.

A Celebration of Life for Shirley will be 2PM ednesday, July 9, 2014 at Komstad Covenant Church, rural Beresford, SD. Visitation will be 5-8PM Tuesday at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford ith the family present from 5-7PM. Shi rley Edman Steven Douglas DeHaven, 62, passed away on June 23, 2014 with his family in Mesa, Arizona. Born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota by Al and Peg DeHaven ith brothers Brett (deceased), Mark and Kevin. He graduated from ashington High in 1969.

In the summers of 1967 and 1968 he participated in a nation-wide mule train from Las Vegas, Nevada to Montreal, Canada traveling 3,000 miles on horseback. This journey gave him a deep appreciation of America. Steve married Janet Olson of Sioux Falls in 1969 and they had two children. He served in the Air Force for three ears, stationed in Korea. Returning to South Dakota he attended Augustana College and graduated cum laude with an accounting degree in 1976.

He subsequently resided in Colorado from 1980 to 2010. Steve was passionate about travel and took his brothers and children to France, England, Scotland and Italy. An avid reader of Civil War history and fan of baseball, he made a point to visit numerous battle grounds and stadiums. A life celebration was hosted in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on May 17, 2014 by lifelong friends, Dallas Barck and Steve Merry. Steve is survived by daughter, Jamie DeHaven Rosenbaum and (husband) Michael of Mesa, Arizona, and son, Alex DeHaven and (wife) Amanda of Los Angeles, California and three grandchildren, Connor Rosenbaum, Mersadies Rosenbaum and Hudson DeHaven.

He ill be remembered for his warm and humorous personality and being the rst to strike up a game of hearts. Services will be held at 1pm on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota. Don was a resident of Sioux Falls for many years orked for Burlington Northern Railroad for 41 years. He is survived by his ife, Iola; four children, Marilyn Nelson, Janet Saatkamp (Alan), Larry Nelson (Edith) and Lori Simpson (John); 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Under the direction of Cheryl Hovorka, Girls State director, 2014 Girls State featured 370 girls who will enter their senior year of high school this fall. Participants were selected from across the state based on scholastic achievement, leadership skills and interest in government. Elizabeth Spier of Sioux Falls was elected Girls State governor, and Veronica Thomas of Rapid City was elected lieutenant governor. Additional elections included Lauren Buisker of Volga, attorney general; Kathryn Kunkel of Sioux Falls, secretary of state; Katie Winckler of Scotland, state auditor; Kennedy Noem of Castlewood, state treasurer; Julia Stys of Sioux Falls, commissioner of school and public lands.

Elected to the Public Utilities Commission were Makenzie Falcon of Aberdeen, Callie Pospishil of Yankton, and Grace Watkins of Sioux Falls. In non-political elections, Girls State delegates elected Tristan Roy of Tabor, Kaitlin of Aberdeen, Samantha Nash of Sturgis, Israel Haile of Sioux Falls, Rita Stange of Dell Rapids, and Haylee Worm of Yankton as six justices to serve on the Supreme Court. Kjerstin Williams of Brandon was elected as chief justice of the Supreme Court. Haley Hinker of Mitchell was chosen as the speaker of the House of Representatives while Sydney Gelling of Aberdeen was elected as the Nationalist Party chair and Esther Swift of Burke as the Nationalist Party keynote speaker. The Federalist Party elected Rachel Evangelisto of Box Elder as keynote speaker and the Federalist Party elected Courtney Anderson of Brookings as party chair.

Calla Harper of Irene was recipient of the outstanding journalist award and Madisyn Waage of Aberdeen received the highest exam score. Emily Meier of Aberdeen captured outstanding speaker honors and ara Waldner of Crooks was selected as the Outstanding Girls tate Citizen. Elle Fettig of Rapid City was selected Outstanding Speaker of the Senate and Anna Mahowald of Sioux Falls was selected Outstanding Speaker of the House. Awards were also presented to Chandler Urban of Twin Brooks, Best Circuit Court Judge; Emily Dresszen of Madison, Best Prosecuting Attorney; Chesney Arend of Emery, Best Defense Attorney; Olivia Torbert of Sioux Falls, Best Appellate Attorney; Rachel Schartz of Humboldt, Best Appellee Attorney; Sarah Kelly of Rapid City, Outstanding Forensic Investigator; Jadah Thaemert of Sioux Falls, President of Citizens Forum; and Abby Drew of Sisseton received the Vice President Citizens Forum award. SALUTE What should have been a fun way to kick off the Fourth of July weekend quickly turned tragic for a Custer man who choked to death while trying to speedily eat hot dogs during a competitive eating contest. The crowd at Way Park in Custer, just across from the county courthouse, as stunned Thursday afternoon when one of six ontestants Walter Eagle Tail, 47 began to choke while trying to win he contest. Paramedics who swiftly were called to his side ried in vain to save him.
