STATE GIRLS TENNIS TOURNAMENT captures 8th onsecutive tennis title From staff reports CHRIS RAPID CITY JOURNAL Morgan Brower hits the ball back to Grace Goble on Saturday morning during the state girls tennis championship at Sioux Park in Rapid City. Brower won her fourth singles title. With all due respect to the Stampede hockey team, it was hard not to get a sense that what took place on the ice Saturday ight was of secondary concern. After all, after 15 years playing in the Arena, a that was derided as ahockey facility almost rom the moment the Stampede moved in, Sioux USHL franchise icked off a new era at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

The Stampede were defeated by the Waterloo Blackhawks 6-4, but the mere spectacle of the new home proved to steal the show. A record crowd of 10,678 the largest indoor crowd to witness a sport- i ng event in South Dakota, depending on who you believe was on hand to experience what truly did ave an NHL feel. The padded stadium seating, he luxury suites, the mammoth center-hung coreboard all of it eemed to be almost too uch for mere junior hockey. And to be fair, a ignificant number of fans a ppeared to be there for the of it. Though the game was tied midway hrough the third period, several hundred fans had left, and the wave actually roke out at one point.

ut ultimately the fans who stuck it out to the end were not sent home with a ictory, as the Waterloo Blackhawks used a Phil eaulieu backhander at he midway point of the third period to break a 3-3 ie en route to the win. Wa- erloo scored a pair of empty-net goals in the final 90 seconds to clinch it. With the win, the Black- awks improve to 3-2 on the year, while the Stamp ede fall to 1-3-1. The Blackhawks did ex- a ctly what a team in their pot would hope to score irst and take the crowd out of the game. Tyler power play goal ut Waterloo up 1-0 midway through the first, and though the arker Tuomie tied it by scoring the first- ever goal in the new arena, hat excitement last, a Brock Boeser answered amere 36 seconds later to put the Blackhawks back by a goal.

Niko Hildenbrand then made it 3-1two inutes later. But the erd would come alive in the second. ith Sioux Falls on the ower play, Dakota Joshua would take a feed from Dillon Eichstadt and knock it home to pull the tampede within a goal, and just two minutes later, yler Nanne wristed one through Waterloo goalie ayden Lavigne to tie the core and finally raise the ecibel level. The Herd had their hances to take the lead, ut Lavigne was solid and so was the defense in front of him. Sioux Falls outshot he Blackhawks 31-24.

Sioux Falls was 1-for-4 on power play opportunities hile Watertloo converted 1 -of-3 attempts with a man advantage. Sioux Falls will look to arn its first victory while playing in its new home ednesday when it hosts ioux City-a team that has defeated the Stampede wice this season.
