THE COURIER-JOURNAL THOROUGHBRED RACING SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1996 C14 CHURCHILL DOWNS GRADED ENTRIES Miss Caerleona wins Cardinal via DQ Post time: 1:10 p.m. EST By Rick Cushing rider, also lodged an objection. But I think I came to him too quick It's a $100,000 race, and people are betting their money. I'm not going to go out there and stand straight up in the air. Once I committed to do it, I was there. COMMENTS: Miss Genius is being raised in class following a win to a level at which she won this summer Shawkllt Lover has been reclaimed by Banks, who won with her at this level here in the spring, has been freshened, one must have faith she's been working. "I was sitting with some horse, and he blew his way through there," Melancon said. "He wound up beating me, but he knocked me off stride. Bam. Bam, he hit me." Said Niall O'Callaghan, trainer of Miss Caerleona, while both fillies circled on the track awaiting the stewards' ruling: "(Perret) had a lot of horse at the time, but he pushed her (Miss Caerleona) out.

Larry was well within his rules to keep him in. I get concerned about safety sometimes in situations like that. A horse can get hurt. That happened to our horse in the spring, she got hurt like that." Shortly thereafter, a roar went up from the crowd of 10,437 as Miss Caerleona was declared the winner, paying $13.80 as the fourth choice in the field of 12 distaffers. "It's just remarkable," said Robert McNair of Houston, who owns Miss Caerleona with his wife, Janice.

"We need to send (equine surgeon Larry Bramlage) a case of champagne." Bail Out Becky had laid comfortably off the pace before advancing on the far turn. Facing a wall of horses at the top of the stretch, Perret darted Bail Out Becky outside to go through but bumped Miss Caerleona soundly. Bail Out Becky sailed to the lead. Miss Caerleona recovered to finish a neck in front of third-place Striesen, a 35-1 shot who is a stablemate of Bail Out Becky under trainer Bill Mott. Bail Out Becky had no sooner covered the 1Kb miles on firm turf in 1:47 when the stewards flashed the "inquiry" sign.

Soon thereafter, jockey Larry Melancon, Miss Caerleona's The Courier-Journal The last time the 4-year-old filly Miss Caerleona won a stakes race, 10 months ago, she fractured her right foreleg in the process. First, there was the question whether she could be saved. That established, it still seemed doubtful she'd race again. But with surgical screws in her shinbone and ankle, Miss Caerleona won the $117,500 Cardinal Handicap yesterday at Churchill Downs after the disqualification of first-place finisher Bail Out Becky. The 2-1 favorite and a double stakes winner here, Bail Out Becky hit the wire 2ft lengths in front of Miss Caerleona but was disqualified to second for knocking her offstride as jockey Craig Perret and 'Becky' bulled between horses in mid- CHOICES: 1.

Our filly got thrown offstride just enough at a crucial moment, when she was accelerating." Miss Caerleona, a nearly-black French-bred daughter of the Nijinsky II stallion Caerleon, now is 5-1-2 in 11 starts and has earned $205,978 for the McNairs, who bought the filly two years ago in France. Last Jan. 21, Miss Caerleona won the Sixty Sails Handicap in New Orleans, coming out with a six-inch break from the middle of the cannon bone to the top of the ankle. She was out eight months. "A lot of athletes, when they sustain an injury, they just give up and never recover," Robert McNair said.

She's just got tremendous heart, and you admire that so much." Albarado is thrown, breaks right wrist Jockey Robby Albarado suffered a fractured right wrist yesterday after his mount broke down in yesterday's second race. The 2-year-old filly Money Hungry was pressing the pace from her inside post when she appeared to take a bad step after a quarter-mile, ducking into the rail and sending the 23-year-old Albarado flying over it, his arms out in front. Money Hungry suffered a complete fracture of her left hind leg, an unusual injury, and was given a lethal injection on the track. Albarado, a native of Lafayette, was taken to Caritas Medical Center for treatment. According to Albara-do's agent, Lenny Pike, the break was set without the use of pins and will sideline the jockey 4-6 weeks.
