degree in 1912 and became Sewanee's second Rhodes scholar. He graduated from Oxford university in England in 1919. In 1929 he delivered the University of the South's com-menccjjient address and was awarded an honorary doctor of civil law degree. He was a member of the board of regents and part-time legal advisor for the university from 1929-41. Upon leaving Oxford, Justice Gailor joined Herbert Hoover's Belgium relief unit and served a year in an ambulance unit, a year in the British Ttrmy, and was an artillery captain In the American army during World War I.

During the Paris peace conference, he was an American army attache. On his return in 1920, he was dmitted to the bar in Memphis and began the law practice which eventually was to lead to formation of one of the city's best known law firms, Gailor, Bejach A McLean. Served in Legislature In 1921, he was elected to the lower house of the. state legislature and returned to Nashville two years later as a state senator. Later he filled in succession the posts of Memphis city attorney, Shelby county trustee and county attorney.
