Christophel and Brewer will have two of the OVC's top receivers as targets, in Steve Puthoff and Steve Bullard. 0 Middle Tennessee State coach Ben Hurt says the Blue Raiders are enjoying their best fall camp since he became head coach three years ago.

Heading into his fourth season, Hurt has yet to record a winner, and the way doesn't appear to be any easier this fall. The Raiders, for example, start the season Saturday night, taking on Ten- nessee State at Vanderbilt. "We know they're gonna be just as big, just as fast and just as good this season as they always are," says Hurt, whose teams have yet to beat TSU. "We'll start drawing up our game plan sometime this week, based on what we've learned from them the past three years." Sophomore Ricky Davis of Murf rees-boro Oakland is currently considered the Raiders' No. 1 quarterback.

Hurt says that won't necessarily hold true till game time, however. "We'll make a final decision this week," he said. "Even then, we may end up playing two or more people at the position." CHOOSE 'fra3f IN Tennessee Tech coach Don Wade is tickled over the tackles he's been seeing in the Golden Eagles' workouts of late. "I believe we may have finally talked some of our guys into hitting somebody," said Wade, who bemoaned his team's lack of defensive punch last season (although it had punch enough to help fashion a 9-2 record).

"We've been pretty well pleased with the way our defense has shaped up. By LARRY WOODY YOU'D THINK somebody who spent the summer working in a cemetery might tend to have a grave outlook on life. Not Randy Christophel. Nope, not even undergoing surgery on his throwing hand has been able to dampen the enthusiasm of the senior Austin Peay State quarterback. "I'm excited and looking forward to our season," says the 5-11, 180-pounder from Reading, Ohio.

"Some people seem to think we'll be down after winning the (Ohio Valley Conference) championship last season. I don't see why. I know I personally won't be. "'Last year was fun, but it's behind us now. This season is what's important." The way Randy figures it, the Chris-tophels deserve back-to-back championships.

After all, his brother Rick Elayed four years at Peay without ever eing on a winning team. And he endured two dismal years before the Govs finally got things going their way in his junior year last season. Christophel's hand was in a cast and his status in limbo this summer. He re-injured a problem thumb during spring drills and had to undergo surgery. He says it's okay now, though.

And even coach Boots Donnelly, the eternal pessimist, had to admit yesterday that the offense "is doing surprisingly well, especially this early." Christophel worked hard on his own this summer to stay in shape, when he got a break from his duties as a cemetery grounds worker. "I feel good, I really do," he says. "Last season gave us all a big shot of confidence and I think has us returning players all the more enthusiastic about our chances of doing something again this year." Christophel's backup is junior Steve Brewer of Knoxville Fulton. Brewer, who has also looked impressive in workouts this fall, was involved in several step-in heroics last year, most notably a touchdown pass late in the Harpeth Hills To Host Match Forty-eight municipal golfers, representing four associations, will meet in the first annual Muny Challenge Matches, Sunday, Sept. 17 at Harpeth Hills.

The players will represent the four municipal associations, the Capital City Golf Association, the Greater Nashville Golf Association, Music City Golf Association and the Sweathogs Sports Association. Each club will furnish six scratch and six other amateur players for the competition.
