Megan's Interco, who won the Cal-Cup Mile in 1993 and '95, didn't gain the lead until the closing strides. "I'm so proud of this horse; he was so game," said trainer Jenine Sahadi, who saddled Lit de Justice to win the Breeders' Cup Sprint a week ago. "Megan's Interco is as fierce a competitor as there is." The 7-year-old gelded son of Interco covered miles in 1:47 under Corey Nakatani and paid $3.40 as the CHOICES: 1. Mighty Red; 2.

PP Horse, Jockey, Weight By JENNIE REES The Courier-Journal Heading back to his barn after the $110,000, Grade III Iroquois Stakes for 2-year-olds at Churchill Downs, Dallas Stewart hollered cheerfully at veteran trainer Jim Keefer: "Keefer, enough of this." No stable rules the local juvenile ranks like that of D. Wayne Lukas, whose Kentucky division is run by Stewart.

But yesterday Keefer was the titan of those ranks, winning a maiden race with the green-but-impressive first-time starter Resin and then the Iroquois with Global View, who at 21-1 was the longest shot in a field of six. Global View outfinished the gritty Lu-kas-trained pacesetter Partner's Hero by a half-length. It was four more lengths to favored Haint. "It's been a good day," said the ever-understated Keefer. "Now we just have to get home all right." Global View and Resin are owned by the partnership of Bill Heiligbrodt, Buddy New and Ted Keefer, the trainer's brother who buys the horses and oversees any sales.

The partnership always liked to buy and sell, but the trio has changed its approach. The emphasis used to be to buy athletic but inexpensive (and therefore not exactly the best-bred) horses, win a race or two in the spring and sell for a tidy profit. Now the partners are paying more for better bloodlines and bringing the colts around more slowly. One result was that for the first time in years they did not have an entrant in the Derby Day WHAS-TV Stakes. But they have had Kentucky Derby starters two of the past three years in Southern Rhythm and Blow Out.

Global View, from the first crop of the good grass horse Fly Till Dawn out of the Storm Bird mare Boom Bird, broke his maiden at Turfway Park in his second start, was a good second in a two-turn allowance race at Turfway to yesterday's fourth-place finisher, Esteemed Friend, then was fourth on the turf at Keeneland. "I told everybody who would listen that he was a good horse," said Sandy New, Buddy's wife. "I guess not that many people listened." Jockey Kenny Bourque said the difference yesterday was that the colt relaxed off the pace, collaring Partner's Hero at the eighth pole and covering the mile in a stakes-record 1:36. "That horse tried to get back by him, and he wouldn't let him back by," said Bourque, who won his first Downs stakes. "He showed a lot of heart." Bourque, who rode both Keefer winners (paying $8.40 and $44), is building a house.

"I got the roof now," he quipped. Haint, fifth for six furlongs and carrying nine pounds more than the first two finishers, made a menacing move coming out of the turn but flattened out. "I'm baffled," said Shane Sellers, who rode Haint. up horses around the turn, I thought he was home." Global View is 2-1-1 in five starts and has earned $102,715 after the $68,200 payday. New said he'd like to see the colt run in the Nov.

30 Brown Williamson Kentucky Jockey Club, although Jim Keefer said something about it coming up too soon. There's also the possibility that he'll be sold, as might Resin. "All of our good horses are for sale," said New, who noted that any sale requires a majority vote. "I have to hope Heiligbrodt is out of town and Ted can't reach him." Bressav. Trainer: Charles Dickey. Start good, won driving. MINE ME TIFF went up early to press the pace outside of front-running DANCING PERFORMER, gained a narrow lead just after the stretch call and outgamed RECOLETA the remainder. RECOLETA, well placed from the start, followed the leaders five wide into the stretch, put a head in front nearing the final furlong, then was outfinished in a long drive. FOUNTAIN SQUARE, within easy striking distance throughout, loomed prominently five wide for the final furlong but could gain only slightly.
