THE COURIER-JOURNAL SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2000 B5 KENTUCKY DEATHS Find the obituaries at www.courier-Journal.com Kentuckian 'doing great' in space station Continued from Page 1 empty shell of Zvezda, the Russian-built living quarters. "There were so many installations to do, there was a question if we could get it all done, especially if we ran into problems," he said. "And sure enough, we have had a few problems." Those snafus included a newly installed battery that wouldn't keep its charge. And Wednesday, the crew had to use a hammer and chisel to break loose a plate that was unexpectedly riveted down over a battery compartment. Mission controllers in both Houston and Moscow were consulted before the astronauts whacked the bracket free.

Despite minor flaws, Wilcutt pronounced the space station "beautiful" and said it was a comfortable 75 degrees inside with 50 percent humidity. "It's about like being in San Diego," he said. Also yesterday, Wilcutt and Altman fired Atlantis' thruster jets to boost the station's orbit 3.5 miles. It was the third of a series of four planned maneuvers to raise the station's orbit. The space station, which is visible from Earth, passed over Sydney, Australia, during Thursday's opening ceremonies for the 2000 Olympics.

"We're looking down waving," one astronaut said. And just before dawn yesterday, the station flew over Houston's Johnson Space Center, where the 150 men and women in Mission Control sent a sentimental greeting to their charges in space. "We had a terrific view of you passing overhead, a really bright, big, beautiful satellite," Mission Control's communicator said. "We were at the window looking at you at the same time," Atlantis responded. All isn't work on board the station.

Mission Control wakes the crew up each morning with music one day playing a Russian rock song for the two cosmonauts on board and the crew share meals together and take turns marveling at Earth. The crew members communicate in English, since not all of the Americans speak Russian. "They know enough English to laugh at my jokes. That could be a plus or a minus," Altman dead-panned. "Maybe they wish they didn't know English so well." BARDSTOWN Louis Seeger Crume 77, formerly of Bards-town, died June 5 in Jupiter, Fla.
