FitzGerald already sits in Family Court and is, in fact, the chief Family Court judge, but he wanted the more permanent position in Circuit Court. District Court judges ro-' tate in and out of Family Court. FitzGerald said of his fellow nominee: "I've worked very well with Jerry Bowles for a number of years. He is an excellent lawyer, an excellent practitioner." Clayton will be only the second black woman on the bench in Kentucky. She joins the first, Judge Janice Martin, in Jefferson District Court.

Bowles and Clayton are expected to take their seats within the next few weeks. Their appointments run through 1998. Bowles will fill a new Family Court seat in Circuit Court created earlier this year by the General Assembly.

Clayton will fill the District Court seat made vacant by the retirement of Judge Charles Scott. Gov. Paul Patton made the appointments yesterday. Patton is particularly familiar with him: In June, Patton appointed Bowles to the Domestic Violence Council, which is headed by Patton's wife, Judi. Bowles is the chairman of the council's Prosecution Policy Committee. "I'm elated," Bowles said.

"I was pleased to be among the three nominees and very pleased to be the one appointed." He has worked on domestic violence cases for years and said he knows the job isn't necessarily all that pleasant. "I know Family Court is not an easy court," he said. "It's not a fun court.
