Inc. 12.2 94 By SHELDON SHAFER Staff Writer Kentucky Kingdom Thrill Park got initial zoning approval yesterday for a huge new roller coaster called T2 that's expected to be ready to roll next spring. The ride is billed as the first model of a "suspended, looping coaster" in North America. The coaster, the park's fifth, will add "a whole new dimension of fear a most terrifying roller-coaster experience," Kentucky Kingdom spokesman John Mulcahy said yesterday. The ride will cost about $7 million and be the centerpiece of a $10 million park expansion for next spring.

The only existing T2-type ride is at Walibi Flevo park in the Netherlands. A similar ride is to open late next summer at Opryland in Nashville, Tenn. The track runs above the riders; when the cars move through the series of loops, riders are upside down and outside the track. The Kentucky Kingdom T2, designed by Vekoma International of the Netherlands, will have 2,152 feet of track and be up to 10 stories high. Up to three trains of seven coaches each can operate at the same time.

The Louisville-Jefferson County Planning Commission recommended yesterday that the Board of Aldermen approve new zoning for an tract just south of the existing park. The park would build a privacy fence where parking would adjoin the Ashton-Adair neighborhood. Also yesterday, the commission voted 4-2 to approve plans by Can-field-Knopf Properties Inc. for Wolf Pen Woods subdivision; Fiscal Court review isn't required. The developer proposes 132 homes on 57.5 acres just north of the Gene Snyder Freeway, southeast of Wolf Pen Branch Road.

Neighbors had complained at earlier meetings of a commission committee that lots would be smaller than surrounding home sites. The full commission required the developer to submit a soil-erosion-control plan and to build a noise barrier along the Snyder. On other cases, the commission: Received 200 signatures on petitions to force a special night hearing, set for Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the aldermanic chambers of Louisville City Hall, on a Jeffersontown case.

Phillip and Joan Stone filed for commercial zoning at 9315 Taylors-ville Road for a chapel and a facility for wedding receptions and parties. Neighbors are concerned about noise and traffic. Approved zoning concessions, including less parking than normal, to accommodate 24 apartments planned by the Cain Center for the Disabled near Wenzel and Marshall streets. The units will be "independent living" quarters for the disabled. Aldermanic review is not required.

Recommended that Fiscal Court approve new zoning sought by Daryl Koppel and David Cash for the Wilke Ridge subdivision. They plan 108 homes on 42 acres 17 of which need to be rezoned just northeast of Terry Road and Lower Hunters Trace. Gave final approval to plans for the Highfern Crossings subdivision, proposed to have 72 lots on 20 acres near La Fon Avenue and the Gene Snyder Freeway.
