Ernie Els, winner of last week's Byron Nelson Classic, shot a 68 and shares second place with Mike Hulbert, Grant Waite, Bruce Fleisher and Mike McCullough. With that quintet already in the clubhouse, Martin eagled the 535-yard par-5 18th hole when he hit what he called "a perfect 3-wood" from 237 yards to four feet from the cup. "I know that this is just Thursday and between now and Sunday a lot of guys will be passing in and out of this interview room," Martin said.

"Hopefully, I'll be back on the last day." Peter Mitchell had three eagles en route to a 6-under 66 and took the first-round lead in the Spanish Open in Madrid. Ignacio Garrido is one stroke back, while Phillip Price, Costantino Rocca and Jose Rivero are tied at 68. Defending titlist Colin Montgomerie and Seve Ballesteros shot 70s, while Bernhard Langer, trying to make the cut for a 56th straight tournament, had a 71. Jose Maria Olazabal shot a 73, while Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam each carded a 75. Mitchell, who had two bogeys and two birdies, scored his eagles with a bunker shot on the fourth and short putts on the seventh and 12th.

Auto racing Indianapolis 500 practice leading up to this weekend's final qualifying at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway began nearly three hours late and lasted just 53 minutes because of rain. Team Penske drivers Emerson Fittipaldi and Al Unser Jr. got some much-needed practice time. Neither two-time winner is among the 25 drivers who earned spots in the 33-car lineup for the May 28 race during qualifying last weekend. Fittipaldi ran 24 laps in a borrowed Lola-Mercedes Bobby Rahal's backup car and reached 223.775 mph.

Unser had a best lap of 218.510 in his 1995 Penske-Mercedes. Car owner Roger Penske has tried to find the answers by testing the year-old car in which Unser won last year's race and a 1994 Reynard leased earlier this week from Pagan Racing, and now the Lola. "We're just hoping that we can see the data from those cars and translate it in some way to our new cars," Fittipaldi said. "So far, we haven't found out too much." Lyn St James, only the second woman to race at Indy, finally came up with sponsorship and made it back onto the track, hitting 216.118 in the seven laps she completed. Teo Fabi, already has qualified and working on his race-day setup in his backup car, was fastest at 226.935, followed by rookie Carlos Guerrero, who hasn't qualified, at 225.717.

Championship Auto Racing Teams announced it has approved new rules for its IndyCar circuit that are designed to improve driver safety by slowing cars during cornering and requiring stronger chassis and side-pod construction. Wind tunnel tests employing the new regulations, which will be implemented next season, indicate the overall aerodynamic package will produce a 27-30 percent decrease in downforce on short ovals, a 20-26 percent decrease on road courses and 8.8 percent on speedways such as Indianapolis. Changes will include restrictions on the angle of the rear wing, increased roll bar and cockpit padding and use of cockpit side panels to reduce head amd neck trauma in crashes. CART sanctions all Indy-car races except the Indianapolis 500, which is conducted by the U.S. Auto Club.

However, CART and USAC generally cooperate in writing their rules. Basketball Notre Dame freshman Brian Watkins, a 6-foot-9 forward from Nashville, has decided to transfer to Maryland after averaging six minutes and 1.5 points in 25 games last season. He visited Louisville and also considered Western Kentucky and Virginia before opting for Maryland. He will have three years of eligibility left after sitting out next season. Jerry Tarkanian hired his son as an assistant coach at Fresno State. It's the first coaching job for Danny Tarkanian, 33, who played guard for his father at Nevada Las Vegas from 1982-84.

He was a Las Vegas attorney for the past eight years. Long Beach assistant John Welch, a 1986 UNLV graduate, also was named to the staff by Tarkanian, who retained current Fresno State assistant Johnny Brown. Pro football A federal judge in Boston refused a request by the National Football League to dismiss former New England Patriots owner William H. Sullivan's $51 million lawsuit against the league, upholding a ruling for a new trial. Sullivan sued the NFL in May 1991 seeking $116 million.

He claimed the league's refusal to allow him to sell public stock forced him to sell the team to Victor Kiam in October 1988 for what Sullivan considered to be a low price of $84 million. A U.S. District Court jury found in Sullivan's favor and awarded him $38 million, which automatically was trebled under antitrust law. Another judge later reduced the overall award to $51 million. Last September the 1st U.S.

Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston ordered a second trial because of prejudicial errors made in the original trial. Baseball Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox and his wife, Pamela, i will appear in court today one week earlier than originally scheduled for him to answer a charge that he hit her during an argument May 7. The case was rescheduled because the Braves will be out of town May 26, the original court date. Boxing Mike Tyson and promoter Don King will announcement Wednesday in Las Vegas the date and opponent for the former heavyweight champion's first bout since serving three years in an Indiana prison on a rape conviction.
