B6 THE COURIER-JOURNAL CRIME DEATHS FRIDAY, MAY 5, 1995 Ohio boy rejoins his mother after father arrested in abduction By DEBORAH YETTER Staff Writer A 5-year-old boy missing since July was reunited with his mother yesterday after his father was arrested Wednesday in St. Matthews on a federal charge of abducting the boy from Ohio. David Lee Estright 53, who Norton, Ohio, police said has been married and divorced 10 times and has two federal fraud convictions, is charged with taking the boy from his ex-wife who had custody and fleeing the state. The case is to appear on television's "Unsolved Mysteries" tonight but producers have added the news that Estright was arrested. U.S.

Magistrate Judge C. Cleveland Gam-bill ordered Estright held in jail overnight yesterday until a hearing can be held today to determine whether he should be released on bond. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Le-sousky asked that Estright be detained as a flight risk and a possible danger to others. Members of the local fugitive task force and the FBI arrested Estright at the Woodlawn Shopping Center at Hubbards Lane and Westport Road, where he was picking up his mail at a private mailbox company, FBI agent Michael Ray said in court yesterday.

The boy was with him and was placed in the Home of the Innocents overnight, Ray said. As his father appeared in federal court, the boy, David Estright was being reunited with his mother, the FBI said. Pamela Diane Estright, who lives Ex-U of football star is charged with theft By MICHAEL JENNINGS Staff Writer Anthony Shelman, the leading rusher for last year's University of Louisville football team, was indicted on theft charges yesterday based on complaints that he flimflammed two Pittsburgh sports agents. Jefferson Circuit Judge William Knopf issued a bench warrant for Shelman's arrest and set his bond at $125,000, the amount of the alleged theft. Shelman's whereabouts are unknown.

Knopf also ordered the impoundment of a 1995 Mercedes-Benz car that Shelman reportedly bought with money obtained through sports agents Dwayne Woodruff a former UofL player himself and Shawn Flaherty. Shelman is charged with theft by deception and theft by failure to make required disposition of property. Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Joseph Gutmann said the alleged theft involved two loans that Shelman failed to repay. Woodruff who played defensive back for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1979 to 1990 is a lawyer at the Meyer Darragh firm in Pittsburgh. He and Flaherty, also a lawyer, could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Jury acquits man A Jefferson Circuit Court jury acquitted a man accused of raping his estranged wife. Jeffrey W. Long, 31, of the 300 block of Caple Road, was found not guilty Wednesday of rape, burglary and assault after a three-day trial. His 26-year-old wife claimed that on Dec. 15, 1993 when he was under a court order to stay away from her Long entered her home, CRIME REPORTS ROBBERIES BP Oil 2210 Arthur St.

Authorities said the boy appeared to be fine, although his hair had been dyed in an apparent attempt to conceal his identity. Dawson Wise, a Norton police detective who has been seeking the boy for nine months, said he was "ecstatic" that the boy had been found safe.

Wise said he gave Pamela Estright the news Wednesday, and she was in tears. "She was very happy, obviously," Wise said. Wise said police had traced David Estright through Ohio, Canada, Tennessee, Georgia and Kentucky before locating him in Louisville. Information developed with the help of the FBI led to his arrest, he said. In court yesterday, Estright asked that a lawyer be appointed for him, saying he didn't have money to hire one.

He insisted on making a statement, even though the magistrate warned him, that anything he said could be used against him. Estright said that the charge against him is not correct and that he took the child because the mother is abusive. But Wise said that accusation is based on a false charge Estright had brought against the boy's mother that was later dropped. Court records show an Ohio judge granted the mother custody in July. Estright will likely be returned to Ohio to face a state charge of child abduction.

Robert Durrant, managing partner at Meyer Darragh, said Flaherty made one of the loans to Shelman and persuaded the law firm to back a separate loan by a western Pennsyl-. vania bank. He said the firm went along with the plan on the understanding that it would share in any benefits if Shelman were drafted by a National Football League team. But Shelman was not drafted, he has not repaid Flaherty and "he certainly has defaulted on the loan to the bank," Durrant said. Shelman "may have thought that we would coddle him," Durrant added, "but we hold him to an adult standard." As a 6-foot-3-inch, 214-pound senior, Shelman, of Bradenton, started 10 games at halfback last fall, gaining 1,084 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns.

Durrant said Shelman was deemed a good NFL prospect late in the college football season, "but then he went South with his effort." He performed poorly in professional tryouts, did not return team representatives' phone calls and "just proved to be unreliable from their point of view," Durrant said. Knopf said grand jurors told him they asked for such a large bond because of the "substantial amount of the alleged theft" and because Shelman's whereabouts are unknown. of raping wife dragged her to a bedroom and raped her repeatedly while holding a pillow over her face. Long's lawyer, Marc Murphy, had unsuccessfully tried to persuade Judge Edwin Schroering to dismiss the rape charge. Murphy claimed Kentucky's rape law allows wives to gain unconstitutional leverage ovet their husbands in divorce cases.
