Taking a page out of Fran Tarkenton's magician's play book, Eastern Kentucky's John Sacca performed an 8-yard scramble with as much sleight of hand as anyone could have requested last night.

It ended in a sprawl in the corner of the end zone, flinging the Colonels past Middle Tennessee 28-27 before 14,600 fans at Horace Jones Field and into the driver's seat in the Ohio Valley Conference race. With Middle leading 27-21 and just over four minutes to go, Sacca faded to try a slant pass to Dialleo OVC Conf. All Eastern 2 0 3 2 Murray State. 2 1 Middle Tenn. 2 1 SE Missouri .2 1 Tenn.

A spectacular double-twisting 13-yard run to 1 by tailback Kippy Bayless who had 165 yards rushing and 56 receiving set up Robbie Roberts' 1-yard dive that got the Blue Raiders within 21-19 with 12:37 to play. Sacca then tried to move Eastern out of a hole at its 7-yard-line. The Colonels even went for it on fourth-and-one from their 28 and made it when Middle jumped offsides. But from the 32 Sacca, who had an outstanding clutch-passing night with 12 of 21 for 164 yards, had a ball tipped at the line. It was intercepted by Nathaniel Claybrooks and returned 38 yards to the one, from where Bayless dove in.

Burks on third- and-seven from the Middle 8-yard line. It wasn't there. Sacca fled the pocket and headed to his left. He pump-faked one rusher and moved toward the line of scrimmage. Another defender approached.

He pump-faked him, sending him to the ground. Now he was on his own. A cor-nerback had him dead to rights at the 6. Sacca hip-faked, the defender lurched toward the sideline and Sacca cut inside. At the 5, he swerved inside, took two steps and dived in for six Marc Collins' kick put Eastern ahead, and Middle's last-chance comeback try was ended by three consecutive sacks for 28 yards in losses.

"So much is going through your mind you don't have time to think what you're going to do," Sacca said. "We were trying to throw the slant to Dialleo. A linebacker was sitting underneath, and I couldn't see him. So I rolled out and gave some little pumps. That seems to work for me." It gave Eastern a 2-0 OVC record (3-2) overall and coach Roy Kidd his 250th victory.
